100 yards with a TX20 mk III
«

Out at the range today trying to shoot 100 yards for the first time.
My TX is shooting 7.87 gr JSB Exact Diablo pellets at 820 fps.
That is a light pellet at sub 12 ft lb. I figure it would be a nice challenge and make shooting shorter ranges easyer.
It took a little time to sight in. I had to stack some targets above my target and turn the top turret up 48 clicks. That is just about max on my scope. Then I had to turn down my magnification to get a decent focus.( now I want to buy a new scope)
But with the scope turned all the way to the top of the adjustment I still needed 1.5 lines of hold over on the trajectory reticle.
The wind was light but not still. And I waited for the wind flag to settle between shots. This is about fifteen shots with one flyer. It was all me on that one. I pulled the trigger to soon.
Over all the shots landed near the center but my aim point was upper left at the X.

Very impressive. I know that some folks do shoot their AGs at 100 yards, but have yet to try it, myself. May have to take along a TX to our local range and see what the guys shooting their 308s think of that.

It was actually fun.
Now that I have a chronograph I can return my TX to the sub 12 ft lb level. So I am thinking of installing a Maccari spring or the stock spring and shiming it to 20 ft lb with 10 gr pellets. I have everything on hand to do it so why not? It will be interesting to go back next week and see how that goes.

Thanks yes it is fun and I want to keep at it for a bit.
Somthing that I found is critical to anyone shooting 100 yards with an air rifle. A spotting scope. I am worn out from walking back and forth today.
To get on paper at 100 yards took over an hour.
First I sight in at a 30 yard zero. Then move out to fifty yards. That was easy because I shoot that distance a lot for Field Target practice.
But past that I moved out to 75 yards and then ten feet at a time until I was at 100 yards. I only have 165 feet on my measuring tape. So even that took a lot of walking around to get the measurement down right.
I can't see the targets from that distance and had no idea what was hitting.

I have a round steel plate 12" diameter hanging by some swingset chain as my 100 yd target.
Have a can of flouresent orange spray paint, I can easily hear and see a dark spot where the impact, simply spray a fresh coat of fast drying orange after so many hits.

I put in the Maccari spring with the factory spacer. This gave me a power boost to 13+ foot lb without much recoil.

So the heavier pellets did better. Now I will go to the range on Monday and begin testing the pellets to see which shoot better . I will zero at 30 yards and then click out to 50 and then 75 . After that it will be holdover with mill dots to get out to 100 yards

Not a great day at the range.
First off. It would be nice to have a spotter scope that is better than the rifle scope. You get what you pay for I guess.
Second
The added power produced added recoil . That hurts accuracy and as the distance gets longer that gets worse.
So what happened? I started out not changing anything but the spring. Same pellet same scope settings. The power or FPS went from 11.8 to 13.8 or 820 to 860 fps with JSB 7.8 Exact pellets. This moved the zero from 30 yards to fifty yards.
At 30 yards the best groups I could get averaged the size of a quarter. Different holdover but not touching anything.
At fifty yards the groups did not really open up that much but the 10.3 did not do as well as the others .
Then I spent hours out to 100 yards. This is a photo of the best I could get . Ten shot groups and I could not see the impacts. I tried to hold the mill dots on center but it was 91 deg amd humid. Fatigue set in. To be fair the 10.3 was the last to get shot and I was feeling it. But four on paper is not great.
Bottom line is I need a better scope to shoot past 75 yards. I don't think I will do anything at this point. Next Monday I will get up early and do the whole test over at 75 yards.

So it looks like that the added accuracy with a lower power shooting rifle is more important than additional power, when shooting at long ranges, most likely 50yds+ I'd judge.
Do you plan on installing back the 12lb spring?

Yes as I shoot Field target . But I want to test accuracy at a distance I can clearly see. So I am going to shoot 75 yards Monday and see how that goes before I go back to 11.8 ft lb.
Then I will shoot at 11.8 ft lb and retest at 75 yards. I don't really have any goals with all of this. It's just that I live in Iowa and there is nothing else to do.

I understand, i was just thinking out loud.
I myself concluded that the added accuracy (due to less recoil) with a sub 12fpe gun will outweigh any presumed benefits from more power, which adds recoil and destroys accuracy. Your tests at 100yds so far seem to confirm that less recoil is more important than more power when shooting at these distances, or greater.

I would agree with that. I am right at the 12 ft lb power level. With the vortex kit the rifle is dead calm. After the 75 yard test I will go back to the vortex kit and try slightly heavier pellets and see how that does.
I did a lot of testing to arrive at the 7.8 pellets but that was mostly indoors. Nothing wrong with retesting it all again.

What do you mean it took you a while to arrive to a 7.8gr pellet? Do you mean to say that the 7.8gr pellet is what you find shoots best in your rifle at those distances after much experimentation? I find JSB 8.44 to shoot better at longer ranges in my sub 12fpe setup.
I havent shot a 10gr+ pellet on my sub 12fpe setup yet, so it'd be interesting to see how it spits the heavier pellets at these long ranges. I would suspect that the rifle may shoot a little less "calmly" due to the added weight the spring needs to push, but we will see.
Sure makes me wish i had space for a 100yd shooting range in my back yard.

I only have 25 yards. out back to shoot. Once a month at a fun shoot I can shoot 100 yids. but haven't tried it seriously in a while. When I did try 100, I shot 7.87grs JSB's through my .177 Diana 470th. Not sure about the MV but with 10.3 JSB's I got 930fps and 1120 with 7grs hobbies so it's in between that. Trigger pull on the 470th is 1lbs 12oz.
After a little warm-up I could hit 3-4 inch bulls eyes pretty consistently. One thing I did that seemed to make it easier was I zeroed so I hit bulls at 50 yards, POA and POI the same, with two dots of hold UNDER and then use two to three dots of hold OVER at 100 yards. It seemed to me it kept everything closer to the center of the scope and sight picture.
Also I use large shoot & see type splatter targets so I can see what I'm doing without walking down range. I can't see the holes at 25 yards without magnification on plain targets.

I tried 13 different pellets. Different shape weight and head size. Before I moved I had 15 yards indoor and 55 yards when I open the door of the garage. I could shoot three times a day and spent hours shooting maybe 10000 pellets. Nothing shot better for me than JSB express. I shoot from a seated field target
Position with a long sleeve shirt.
I recently moved and have only a range to shoot at. The rifle range is 100 yards so I thought I'd see how I do. I'm disappointed I can't see that far. I can see where I aim and walk up and see where they hit. But I can't see the hits through the scope. So I will go to a distance I can see and leave it at that. Probubly 55 yards
I may try the shoot and see targets. That would be a help

Racer, if your going to continue to play around out to 75 and 100 yards, I recommend you buying the FX No Limit Mounts. AOA has them. If you use them, you will always be shooting from a scope that is just about optically centered. You won't be blowing up scopes by shooting when they are max'ed out, and the extra kick from 20FPE will be much less harmful on your scope.

Definitely good advice. But I won't be going up in power.
As for my scope. It is not broken it is just not good enough to see far. As the zoom goes up it gets harder to see distance. So to focus at anything past 50 yards I need to turn down the magnification. After 75 yards I am all the way down.
I don't want to change anything as my rifle is dead accurate in the normal Field target distance of 8-55 yards.
The only problem with the scope is the parallax wheel seems to feel loose. It rocks around like somthing might be broken inside. I think it might be from the case smashing it. I removed some of the foam to give more space.
