Title: TX200 will only half cock
Post by: DEAN on March 11, 2023, 10:51:22 PM
I just uninstalled a Vortek pg4 kit that was supposed to be a HO kit but was only doing 11 ftlbs, ordered another PG4 HO kit and figured to keep the 12ftlb kit in case I ever want to drop down in power.. anyway installed the new kit and now gun is super hard to cock and only goes halfway before it stops, can barely get it decocked.
There is nothing up inside the piston sleeve or piston but my piston does not sit down flush on piston chamber, its sitting about 3/16 of a in from being down on back of chamber. I dont remember it being this way before but it could of been.
This new kits spring is 2 coils longer then the old pg4 so pretty sure it is the HO  kit.
Including a pic of how piston sits in chamber.  Does it look right?

took it apart again(3rd time), put back together after checking everything and still the same thing, its not making it to the clicks in the bear trap before it gets stuck..is it possible the new spring is too long. I bought the gun from Straightshooters and they said its a full  power gun. The piston stem is sticking 1 1/4 inches out of piston which is what Tom at Vortek said a full power piston stem should measure so I'm at a loss as to what the *(&^ is wrong.

I just went and reinstalled the old PG4 kit and guns cocks and fires fine which now tells me the new pg4 kit spring is too long or this gun is not a full power gun.Its shooting a 14.6 gr pellet 654fps with old kit which now puts it at 14#lb up from 11ftlb, I did also install the original piston seal and took vortek seal off as it was super tight in piston.

Is the original top hat perhaps stuck in the compression tube?  It may not drop out easily as gunk tends to build up there.

That was my thought, also.

It is mentioned in this video, which I love because he's working on the TX200 on his wife's white lace tablecloth.  Cajones!

I’ve been looking into tune kits for the TX and that seems very common on the PG4 kit.  You should call Vortek about it.  The answer from Vortek has been to cut 1-2 coils from the spring(from random internet posts).  Seemed for the money not worth it to me.  I decided on the Tinbum guides, Vortek seal and stock spring.  From what I’ve read, that Vortek seal is meant to be tight and will size correctly after a 100 shots or so.  You are correct, the spring is too long it seems.

When I rebuilt mine, the original top-hat was stuck in the compression tube……backwards..which of course increases the pre-load on the spring resulting in a higher speed.
I didn’t even know there was a top-hat in there.
So when I put the new parts (I reused the cocking shoe) all back together with a top-hat, it would not go back together.
So I left out the new top-hat an it went back together.
Hmmm.
I took it apart again and wrapped the compression chamber on AA wooden block and VOILA, the original top-hat fell out..backwards..
I am sure AA didn’t do that.
Probably the USA distributor…PA

No the original tophat came out with the spring, my power is now up to 14ftlbs after reinstalling the original breech seal and 1st Vortek kit.The kit I just received gun will not cock when installed, betting spring is too long, when lain side by side with 1st pg4 kt its a full 2 coils longer.
Im 212.00 into this and still dont have a full power gun ???

Of course the new one is longer.
The original shrunk from use.

Well I figured it would shrink some but 2 full coils worth, so whats the reason it wont cock it has to be a spacing issue right? The kit looks identical other then length of spring.
Going to shoot it as is and will mess with it in the future, sure I can make it work one way or the other.

I don't know if this is a possibility, but...

Years back, I had trouble with my brand new TX200 occasionally not activating the auto safety and occasionally not cocking.  The issue turned out to be the cocking shoe.  It was a known issue and I purchased an aftermarket shoe that fixed the problem immediately.  Another fix involved adding some material (weld or braze?) to the shoe.   A web search might turn up info on that issue.
