Title: Scope for Magnum Springer
Post by: bmb on January 21, 2019, 12:37:17 AM
I have an Umarex Octane and I am looking for a reasonably priced scope that will stand up to it's recoil. I had a center point that didn't fair to well and I'm just not a big fan of the red dot that I have on it now.

Define reasonably priced as there are quite a few air gun rated scopes that will hold up to the recoil of a spring/gas piston air rifle from Hammers, UTG Leapers and Hawke to name a few.

I highly recommend the Rex scope sold by Flying Dragon Air Rifles. Call (515-924-3699) and Mike will set you up with the 3-9x40 AO for $70.00. This scope will hold up to your springer for sure. You may also consider a UTG Leapers MNT-DTW145 Inc, Dovetail to Picatinny Rail Adaptor from Amazon and you will never have scope creep. I shoot two springers and the adapter locks down the scope perfectly.  I destroyed a Hammer scope in 15 shots on one of my magnum break barrels. Do not buy that brand.

I'd like to stick around the $100 Mark. As far as dovetail to pickatinny mount. The gun already has a picatinny mount. I'll check out the other suggestions. Has anyone tried a bugbuster on a magnum springer with any luck.

I put a bugbuster compact on a D48 and its held up with no problems. Had to lean forward a bit though due to eye relief.

What kind of FPE are you seeing with your Umarex Octane?

I do like my Hammers 4-12X40 with it's one piece mount. Guess I got lucky?
It does say "for High Power Magnum Spring Air Gun" right on the the description.

Thanks Rob

Scott, I do not have a chrony so I'm not sure. Do you know if the mount that comes with the Hammers scope will work with a picatinny rail? From the pics, I'm guessing not.

I emailed about the Rex scopes. He said he wasn't sure if they would hold up on the octane or not.

+1 on the Hammers scope. You can buy a one piece weaver/ pic scope mount(amazon) if needed.
I have had one on my Ruger Air Magnum for about two years with no issues.

I am running Hawke 4-16X Eclipse scopes on the R1 and the Diana 52.
Absolutely fantastic..

I may have to try one of those Hammers. The Hawke eclipse is currently unavailable at PA and Amazon.

Unavailable everywhere.
Stopped making them.

Hammers makes one they specify is for magnum springers. Would just need to order some Weaver rings. Amazon has some utg rings that look decent for under $15.

I would look at the one piece mounts. I believe they have a lot to do with scope longevity on a springer?

I have, however there isn't much for a Weaver rail.

I would also consider a droop compensating mount that way the optics can be kept closer to mechanical center. If you have to crank the elevation to an extreme the risk of scope failure increases

I have two of these on my magnum Springers.
www.pyramydair.com/s/a/Leapers_3_12X44_AO_SWAT_Compact_Accushot_Rifle_Scope_EZ_TAP_Illuminated_Mil_Dot_Reticle_1_4_MOA_30mm_Tube_See_Thru_Weaver_Rings/3429
 (https://www.pyramydair.com/product/leapers-3-12x44-ao-swat-compact-accushot-rifle-scope-ez-tap?a=3429)

Just a bit over the $100 mark but well worth it.

What is you take on the "easy tap"?
To me it is just an added expense I will never use.
Heck, I hardly ever use the red / green illumination unless I am out very early or late evening.

I have never once used the illumination. I like the scope, very clear optics. The illumination just comes along for the ride.

I'm not really sure. I looked at two and only one said it in the initial description.

Doesn't appear that way.
They have a seperate line of "Air Rifle Scopes" and only some of those say "Magnum Rated".

I have two UTG/Leapers scopes on my Hatsan Dominators. The scopes have been holding up well. I would totally trust them on other magnum springers. I'm not at home so I have to trust my memory. I think I have the BugBuster 3-12x44 and the 6-24x56. The latter is a big honking scope at 17 inches long but I didn't realize what I was getting myself into when I ordered it; its also out of the price range you are asking about but the BugBuster is not. Both scopes do very well in very low light conditions making the illuminated reticle essentially unneeded. Shooting at night under a bright moon is an interesting experience. The reticle is a bit chunky for use in competitions but for plinking and hunting it does the job very well at least out to 100 yards and its an etched reticle, not wire. The BugBuster was about $140 or so if you include shipping but totally worth it. IMO its all the scope most of us will ever need on a springer.

Thanks guys. I went with the Hammers 3-9X40. I'll see how I like it. Definately want to try the Bug Buster as well. Maybe I'll get one for my Hatsan .30 break barrel.

Please keep us updated on your thoughts of it Bradley.
I hate to keep recommending a scope if others find not up to the task.

While not mounted on an air rifle with the kind of recoil the Octane has, I have the 3-9x40 mounted on a Hatsan 1000X .25 caliber springer and while it's only got maybe 2 tins of pellets through it, I have no complaints so far. Mine is sighted for 25 yards, no turret issues, the glass while not quite as good as my Hawkes is still pretty good and I can park 5 under a quarter or 1 in the head of a little grey pest at that 25 yards.

Will do Scott.
It may be a while. I will be taking a snowmobile trip, going to the Caribbean,  and trying to purchase a house, all in the next 3-4 weeks.
First impressions are good though. Seems very clear and feels quite hefty. I'm excited to give it a try.

The Hammers scopes are excellent and have a great warranty.  I think I have 7. I would use the excellent one piece mount that comes with the scope. I think a one piece mount is key to long life on a magnum springer. If the Octane has a scope stop or a pin hole it won't move....

As much as I would love to I can't use the one piece mount. It is for dovetail and the octane has weaver.

My RWS 460 .22 is topped with a Hawke airmax 3x9 AO. ITS made for the double recoil of Springer's. Mine's holding up great. Had it for several years now.

Thanks Ron. I have  Hawke on my. 177 D34 and love it. They are just a little more than I wanted to spend for that rifle. More than I spent on the rifle its self as car as that goes.

You should be able to get an inexpensive but solid pair of weaver rings and that Hammers scope, still stay under $100 and the weaver/pic rail will stop the rings from sliding backwards.

That's exactly what I did Steve. I have it mounted but have been too busy to take and send pics. I couldn't even make it to the local Sportsman club to shoot last night but should be able to sight it in and get some pics at the next one in two weeks.

Muzzleloader scopes are a good option seeing as how they are built to hold up to a certain type of brute force recoil

Strongly consider a scope with a 30mm tube in your search. I've had good luck with them in springers, more so than one inch tubes. I've read the 30mm scopes are generally more robust than one inch scopes.
Also, a scope with an internal coil spring pressing against the reticle seem to do well in minimizing reticle shift.
This comes at a penalty far as weight though, usually this type of scope will weigh 21-23 oz instead of the 14-16 oz I would prefer.
Otoh, If a Sightron SIH will hold up to magnum rigor I'd go for it, I believe they are in the 16oz range? Do the entry level Sightron S1's also carry the lifetime transferable warranties?

I finally had enough time and light to try out my new scope only. 25 Octane. Evan with the fading light it had a very clear sight picture. The sight picture was also very easy to find and center. I love the easy to read and positive click adjustments. I'm looking forward to warmer weather to spend more time fine tuning it. I may even have to get another one for my Hatsan .30 springer.

When I researched this for my Gamo Magnum, the Nikon Prostaff P3 Target EFR 3-9x40 AO Matte Precision Black was highly recommended for springers.
