Title: IZH-Baikal 61
Post by: 45Man on August 30, 2012, 07:50:02 PM
New to airguns but not to guns or amateur gunsmithing.

Got the IZH 61 about a month ago, didn't care much for the open sights.  At 8M range tried a couple different red dots & a Simmons Blazer 4X scope I had lying around.  Settled on the 4X scope after I adjusted the parallax (easy to do on the Simmons).  Out of 5 shots from the magazine, 3-4 will go inside a quarter size area, but 1-2 was always a flyer (an inch or 2 out)  no matter what pellet or optic.  Same results with artillery hold or buttstock clamped in gun vise.

Being a spring piston, I thought maybe the muzzle needed more weight and/or a muzzle brake.  The muzzle is threaded 11Mx1.0 & the IZH Drozd Adapter, 1/2"x28TPI, Thread Protector fits perfectly.  Got a Levang compensator from Brownells & now all 5 shots will go into a dime size hole with any pellet, 2 or 3 go into the same hole.

Don't know if it's because of the extra weight on the muzzle or the type of muzzle brake.  I've tried about 3 groups of 5 & the same for all.

Here's some pics of the hardware.

Iv got a steel breech izh-60, i cut a crown on it because it looked like the barrel was cut with a torch, and the original crown appeared to be cut with a piece of concrete. Before id get half dollar sized groups at 10m, now i get a ragged hole or a clover leaf at 10m. I also polished the bore, breech and bolt with some mothers mag polish. I read an article about cutting a groove into the bolt probe for an oring to seal things up. Guys claim to gain consistancy and up to 25fps, which is a HUGE gain for these punny little plinkers. One of these days, im goong to dremel a grove in that bolt and slap on an oring. I picked up my izzy for $20 bucks, awesome grab!

Mine's been extremely accurate since day one.  The muzzle brake is from from eBay and is only there to cover the threaded end of the barrel.   It doesn't make any difference in accuracy.  Even with cheap pellets it shoots cloverleaf groups at 10 m.

Most of the red dots are parallax free greater than 50yds, which could account for the "cloverleaf pattern" at 10M.  That BSA appears to be a 30mm, smaller would have less error.  My 42mm red dot worked pretty good, too, but the 4X scope seems just about right for the IZH.

The Levang is steel, about 1/4 lb & is used on the AR15.  On that platform, it directs all the muzzle blast forward.  It costs about the same as a fake suppressor.

BTW, the "thread cut" on the adapter made initial threading difficult.  Had to remove it from the IZH, put it in a padded vise, oiled it up good & use a strap wrench to get the brake on.  Now it's easily installed by hand on & off.  The Levang chased the threads on the adapter.  It probably would have damaged an aluminum brake.

$20 for the IZH-60, that's a bargain!

Didn't express myself too well there.  I was just saying my 61 has been very accurate right out of the box without having to touch the crown or anything else.

Small cloverleaf groups at 10m with a cheapo $25 red dot was meant to convey that the rifle is plenty accurate.   I'm sure a quality scope would make it even more so.   I just wanted folks to know these rifles *can* be great shooters with no tweaks.  Luck of the draw I guess but in my opinion well worth the risk because they're a lot of fun to shoot.   Mine is usually the most popular rifle when I have friends over.   Much more so than some of my high dollar guns.

Being Russian, I can't help shivering every time I look at new IZH-60, 61 etc (no offense to their happy owners). I still remember those days when back in Russia I went to short ranges and shot classic design IZH's - those were fun moments! How's the quality of new Baikal's?

I think they're great!   I have a 46M that's extremely accurate, the 61, which is very accurate and a blast to shoot, and a 53M, which isn't going to win any matches but is a fun little springer with a great price.

My 53 is happy to shoot 1/4" groups each shooting session at 5 meters but it seems like the POI moves around from day to day.  I always take a few shots to see where it's hitting on a given day and then it consistently puts a bunch of pellets in that spot.   The next day that spot may be 3/4" lower and to the left but again it will consistently put pellets in that new spot.  Acts like the sight is loose but it doesn't seem to be.  Fun either way.

I think they're all good air guns.

I enjoy posts about the IZH-61.  I have thought they are great looking.  I'd sure spring $20 if one came up.  45man, thanks for the tips.  I'm sure the added weight has changed some harmonics, but whatever it's a big improvement.  And good looking.

I like the looks, too.  It's certainly worth the $120, new.
I seem to favor the pistol grip on most rifles & the Hogue Handall Jr. fits the 61 nicely,  The whole thing has a military look to it which some don't like, but I find the design very unique & the plastic stock is not out of place & is not cheap & seems quite rugged.

The 53M is a very large, but not very heavy & breaking force is not excessive.  Plastic stock is similar material, but not identical or maybe just a variation in raw plastic material.

Both came with slot-end cleaning rods, a very nice touch.

The IZH 60 is finally gettting my attention. I have always like the style and had looked for a steele breech 60 in the past but long ago I gave up.

Recently I have looking at some of the mods for them. Here are a couple.

Last year there was a blurb about a IZH 61 PCP but it died out.  Has anybody seen anything about it recently?

The barrel is positioned about 0.5" forward of the breech face & the steel loading rod sets the pellet deep inside & seals the chamber.  The wall thickness at the breech is 0.35" which is greater than the wall thickness of 3" Sch 80 PVC pipe that has a working pressure of 225 psi & burst pressure of 1200 psi.  I don't think the plastic breech is any issue at all in this springer design. i.e., it is nothing like a break barrel.

AFAIK, the PCP is a one-off conversion.  The scope mount is also custom, it may actually serve as a reinforcement for the breech.
