I started on new grips for my son's Daisy 408 last night.
I laser cut the outline of both sides onto a piece of 3/8" cherry, then rough cut to shape on a bandsaw. After that I use a belt sander and Dremel drum and 1/8" carbide bits to finalize the outline. The back side needs a few reliefs cut the safety and alignment pegs, and a little at the bottom (because they're oversize vs. stock).
After that it's belt sander and Dremel drum to shape the finger grips, then lots of sanding with a flexible wallboard sander for final shaping.
That left grip is about 3 hours of work. It's the easy side. The right side will have the thumb rest (he's a lefty) so I'll be adding material for that before shaping for his hand.
Lots more sanding ahead, then adding finish and maybe some checkering.

Very cool! Woodworking has always fascinated me, but sadly I have no talent.

Neither do I, but that doesn't stop me from trying. This is like the fifth set of 408 grips I've made. The other 4 were for mine. I only have 1, but it took me 4 tries to get it close-enough.
My brother and father have the woodworking talent.
