Title: Bucket of Rats
Post by: Luis Leon on February 05, 2019, 07:41:12 AM
I know many of my ratting brothers here on the forums have been suffering a rat shortage. In that light I went to the dairy last night on a mission to only kill rats. Stopped by the drive through and ordered a bucket to go. Oh my god! there are so many rats here that its incredible. I felt like one of the guys on the youtube ratting videos. Whats in the bucket represents half of my kills. I slew at least 30 rats last night. They are literally everywhere, most shots where from 15 to 30 yards. The Compatto has been merciless this year.

O-man you delivered, just like KFC in a bucket of rats. Just keep an eye on the horde in case they decide to take you by force.

Wow, that must be a lot of fun! Just for sense of scale here: that is a 5 gallon bucket, correct? (Big rats!)

So that is where all the rats went.  Come on now, remember your suppose to share and not hog all of them.

Yes a 5 gallon bucket... there are some monster rats there. This place is infested way more rats than I could ever handle. Prior to this permission 25 shots from my Compatto seem like plenty. I now am wanting a bottle gun with a much higher shot count.

@TF89, this place has more rats than anyone would want on their property. Can’t send you any, the images will have to do. I would love to share this property with other responsible shooters. Just have to work on the owners a bit to warm them up to it. The place could easily support six rat shooters at night.

Wow, that's Rat City.  I'm envious you have a place to kill that many rats in one sitting.  I do have to admit, that bucket O'Rattus kinda creeped me out just a tiny bit. I hate rats. Ok, I love to shoot rats but I hate the buggers.

Again, WOW.  :o

Luis, holy moly grail of rattus! Great shooting/pesting! You braved the cold and slew a bucket load :). You definitely need a bottle gun or a quick refill with a carbon fiber refill station! Your Compatto is surely showing no mercy on those rattus :).

Oh Boy,
Kentucky Fried Rattus, they taste pretty good............... ;)

Time to get a 10 shot repeater with 1/2 dozen EXRTA mags pre loaded, and a big BOTTLE..........

Man, I miss rat hunting at the local dump at night, did it for several years, until,

"We are  stopping this practice because you might shoot something dangerous"  WTH, it's a dump ground,
garbage is dangerous? and the maintenance worker run over everything with a BIG skip loader?

Had a local County commissioner that hated me,
I cited him after 2 warnings for speed zone violations, ie, 75 mph in a 35 mph speed zone,
then caught him driving very drunk, had to lean against the truck to keep from falling down etc,
he told me  "Do you know who I am" etc, Yes I do, and your are not exempt from following the law,
you have a choice get booked and I'll tow your truck, or I'll call you a ride, he got a ride.  ::)

The sheriff called me in for a sit down, and what had happen during the traffic stop etc,
after I explained, what I had saw and the actions I had taken, the CC called me a liar etc,
I brought my tape recorder, that I carried on my duty belt, and played the tape of the complete traffic stop,
with both our voices on the tape, after hearing the tape and the names I was called etc.

The sheriff said to me, you handled everything by the book, and "You done Good, (Sheriffs way of saying, good job),
"If you stop him again for any more traffic violations, Book him", with the CC sitting there.  :o

He chose to get back at me (us), there were several of us, that would meet at O' dark thirty,
and shoot rats etc, by closing the dump to shooting.

He is no longer a CC, after 1 term. ;D

Thanks, Luis Leon, for bringing back memories.......

Don

Steve the bucket creeps me out too. This place has guaranteed rats... I forgot to mention the coyotes were yipping and howling up a storm that night.

@Randall it was actually a nice night, it was almost sixty degrees here in NY today. I do bring a bottle but have to make trips back to the truck for refills.

@Don, too bad about the dump being off limits. Maybe some farms in your area? Any place that raise livestock will have rats.

Nice load of dead Scaley Tails !
Are you taking these during Daylight ? or at night ?
If at night, are you using lights mounted to your gun ?
If so, what kind of lights are you using ?

My group of shooters have literally thousands of dead rats under our belts.
We've used all kinds of various guns and configurations of lights and sights to take them out.

For shooting them out to about 35-40 feet, you just can't beat an old Trapmaster with a red flashlight mounted. This is so much fun it'll ALMOST make you feel guilty, hahaha.

For distances beyond 40 feet, the Trapmasters shot pattern gets too wide, and has difficulty dropping them DRT.
So that's when we go to single projectile guns.
The trick we've come to realize is that we really don't need our more expensive, more powerful, guns to do the job.
as a matter of fact, some of the cheaper guns available make for some FANTASTIC Ratting guns if you set them up properly.
We have spent countless hours over the past few years, ratting at several farms, that were just as over-run with the rats as you are currently seeing.

And you wanna know what ? ? ?
The BEST ratting set-up I have seen used to date, ( for up to about 30 yards), is the Crosman 1077 ! ! !
Why is that, you ask ? ? ?
Well,... it's about $75 to buy a semi-automatic, pellet pusher,
and extra magazines cost about $6 for a pack of 3.
 Each magazine holds 12 shots.

Now if you want to turn it into an absolute Night Time Rat Assassin, you do what one guy did, and you buy, (this is where it gets expensive), NV goggles w/ headgear,
 (here's a few examples)
https://www.amazon.com/X-Vision-Deluxe-Rechargeable-Digital-Goggles/dp/B07DQ4BPB7/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1549438036&sr=8-12&keywords=night+vision+goggles (https://www.amazon.com/X-Vision-Deluxe-Rechargeable-Digital-Goggles/dp/B07DQ4BPB7/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1549438036&sr=8-12&keywords=night+vision+goggles)

https://www.amazon.com/X-Vision-Deluxe-Rechargeable-Digital-Goggles/dp/B07DQ4BPB7/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1549438036&sr=8-12&keywords=night+vision+goggles (https://www.amazon.com/X-Vision-Deluxe-Rechargeable-Digital-Goggles/dp/B07DQ4BPB7/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1549438036&sr=8-12&keywords=night+vision+goggles)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B07MK6H8RQ/ref=dp_olp_new_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=new (https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B07MK6H8RQ/ref=dp_olp_new_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=new)

and a gun mounted mini IR laser, similar to these ...

https://www.amazon.com/Mounted-Laser-Infrared-Requires-least/dp/B00BD55OVG/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1549438558&sr=8-4&keywords=infrared+laser+sight (https://www.amazon.com/Mounted-Laser-Infrared-Requires-least/dp/B00BD55OVG/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1549438558&sr=8-4&keywords=infrared+laser+sight)

https://www.ebay.com/itm/NcStar-Green-IR-Infrared-Laser-Designator-Box-w-QR-Mount-Pressure-Switch/192121056637?epid=675772756&hash=item2cbb4ead7d:g:SJwAAOSwSlBYvGe1:rk:43:pf:0 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/NcStar-Green-IR-Infrared-Laser-Designator-Box-w-QR-Mount-Pressure-Switch/192121056637?epid=675772756&hash=item2cbb4ead7d:g:SJwAAOSwSlBYvGe1:rk:43:pf:0)

I've never personally owned this set-up, but I did get to shoot it with a guy who did.
And what I can say is, He easily got 5 - 10 rats to each one of mine, using my Trapmaster with a side mounted flashlight.
This is because he was not projecting any visible light to spook the rats. (where I WAS spooking them with the flashlight).

He could just sit there in total darkness and watch them pop out of the livestock feeder bins.
The IR laser is zero'd to the rifle, and you can only see it with the NV Goggles.
The rats don't see it, so they dont spook away.

And I think the FUNNEST part, was shooting the rifle from the hip, and not even raising it up to the shoulder.
A pocket full of 10-12 magazines, and a bunch of Co2 carts, ... and you'd be AMAZED how well that little 1077 will serve the purpose for ratting.

But Be Advised,
(in my best Yoda impersonation)

A very deep hole, the ratting hobby is !
Cheers,
Have fun, Shoot Straight, Shoot Safe

very well said Ron,

I was about to suggest also the Nova Liberty in .177. The rifle in his wood stock is $329, and 300 in synthetic and you can fill it to 300 bar. Is not a bottle airgun, but with .22 people are getting around 90 shots regulated.... I'm receiving mine today, I think this can be an excellent choice for your rattus....

I'm taking these rats at night. I have a Lumenshooter light I purchased from Amazon atop the Compatto. I alternate using the red and green LED that came with the light. I can make shots out to fifty yards using the green LED.

Went back last night 02/10/19 mostly to scout out more efficient shooting locations. Shot 10 incidental rats it was cold and I had limited time. Going forward will be setting up in the bed of my pickup, which will afford a great overview of at least three different rat highways.

That's the way you do it.......... Bucket-O-Rattus, I Love it, you would be a god in South Asia...... at least someone is having FUN.... It's been Raining here at the other end of the Country, San Diego has been getting record rain, Much needed rain, but Rattus don't like it, I'm hoping it will cause a mass explosion of Rattus Population and I could get back to the all night Buffet and Lobotomy center.....

Hi,

After seeing a flock of rats, I bought an Avenger and a Lumen Shooter for use in my backyard--LA Suburb. The closing of restaurants reportedly forced the rats into neighborhoods--including mine I suspect.

I have trouble getting the rats to my bait. When I have, I missed every one at which I have had a shot!!! I plan to switch from body to head shots in case I am wounding them after which they run off to die. (No blood seen under black light)

Any tips:
* Leave the Lumen Shooter on all the time?
* Lumen Shooter Light level?
* Other?

Thanks,

DJ

DJ, I'm sure you have a light in your back yard. Replace it with a red (rodents cannot see the red light spectrum but can see it's brightness) flood light (40 watt) and point the light 90 degrees away from where rats come. Put peanut butter on a board with a back stop of another board. You can then use just your normal scope to shoot them. What distance are you shooting them? If they are closer than what your Avenger is zeroed at then you might be aiming too high....if so, you'll have to know your hold over/under or click to the closer distance before shooting the rats, practice shooting at the distance they usually are. Use peanut butter as they cannot make off with it, they have to stay and eat it there. A good tip is do not take head shots on rats unless they are facing you head on, they stick their neck out to eat so their head moves in and out but a head shot works if facing you head on. If they give you a broadside shot, their hearts are located just behind their shoulders mid body. Google rat anatomy, you'll see where their vitals are located. You'll get them!
