Tau 200

I found a trove of tau 200s (synthetic stock, about 10 of them...) brand new in a box... anyone has had any experience with them??? anyone can tell me how reliable they are??? I might be able to buy the whole lot cheap... what are they worth, new in a box???

Tau is a highly regarded CO² rifle- that sounds like an interesting find!

No ideas on present value, and I've not seen the synth stock version.

4mm CTC groups on that test??? That's almost useless for 10M matches where the 10 spot is only 1mm. Even the tiniest error makes you miss it. That's like 1.5 MOA.

CTC means center to center, i.e. with 4mm ctc you are looking at 9.5mm groups at 10M. Add to that shooter errors and it will be real hard to hit 1mm dot 60 times out of 60.

As good as Todd thinks his B&D Workmate works as a rifle vice, I don't place a lot of faith in his accuracy test.  My own Workmate has enough slop in the mechanism that allows for movement that I do not consider it a valid test.  And he used only 4 different pellets, so you do NOT know what the actual potential of that rifle is.  The rifle may shoot a lot better with a different pellet (brand/model/size/weight).

Or is your group size the furthest "outside" of the hole to the furthest outside of the hole?
To me, 4mm CTC means that the center of the holes of the outside pellets in the group are 2mm to left and 2mm to the right of center.  So for a 4.5mm diameter pellet (2.25mm radius), being 2mm to the side, it would still hit the 10 ring with a 0.25mm margin.  What is important is the inner point of the pellet hole, not the outer point.

If they are synthetic/resin stocks, I think they are all Junior's.
I don't think the TAU-200 Senior was made with a synthetic stock.  But I could be mistaken.
Does it have a barrel weight?

BTW the 10 "ring" on a 10m target is 0.5mm in diameter.

IMHO The TAU-200 is an excellent tier-2 match rifle.

But 9mm the posted accuracy numbers on the AofA site is scary bad, as in POOR accuracy for a 10m rifle. But what is confusing is I think this is an outside-to-outside measurement, not center-to-center as we are used to.

This is what I got off the http://www.taubrno.com/ web site after running it thru the Google translator
   Variance - the circumscribed circle diameter 5 ran/10m max Ø 8 mm (5x DIABOLO)
I interpret this as an 8mm outside to outside group
Subtract 1/2 diameter 2x (4.5mm) and I get a 3.5mm CTC accuracy.  Not great but OK.

But I just found this from an online manual
   The diameter of circle drawn round 10 hits at the distance of 10 m is 9 mm.
So that is a 9mm outside to outside group.
Subtract 1/2 diameter 2x (4.5mm) and I get a 4.5mm CTC accuracy.  This is 9 ring accuracy.

I can't help but think that they did NOT test for best accuracy with a 'selected' pellet brand/model/size/weight.

I haven't shot 10M matches for a while, but back in the days I did - we considered 5-6mm groups using RWS meisterkugelns adequate. That would translate to 0.5-1.5mm ctc. Any larger and you are seriously hurting your changes of achieving decent results. And back in the days any serious 10M rifle could do that, if it couldn't it just wasn't suited for match use. We used mostly FWB300 and 600 series so I don't know if TAU is capable of doing that in real life (could well be).

If the TAU-200 can't get tighter groups, I will be seriously disappointed. 
I thought it was capable of much better accuracy than the specs list.

I respect checz gunmakers so Tau could well be a good gun for 10M matches. Then again, no-one in my 10M circles used those or actually any non german guns. FWBs were the most common and then some anschutzs, steyrs and walthers. Maybe there was a reason for that?

The TAU is a LOT rougher in finish and metal work, and the trigger cannot compare to a FWB.  But I thought of it like the IZH, functional, just not pretty.
Maybe I have to rethink my thoughts of the rifle.

I had a Tau 200 Jr that was a very accurate and fun rifle to shoot.  I got to think that the grown-up version would be every bit as accurate.  I'm actually thinking about picking up one.

I think the action on the Jr and Sr is the same.
From what I can figure out, the difference is the installed barrel weight and a longer stock on the Sr, making the Sr heavier and with a longer LoP.
