New Air Gunner Crossman 140 questions
(1/1)
TheWanderingRed:
Hello all, this is my first real post here so if I bugger something up please forgive me.
I recently found my dad’s old Crossman 140 and I’d like to fix it up for him for Father’s Day. Unfortunately I know nothing about air rifles.
What should I do as far as testing its current condition?
Can I dry fire it?
Should I try putting a pellet through it and seeing what happens?
How can I accurately date this thing?
Its in pretty rough shape. A little rust on the ?chamber? cover. Non-existent bolt handle. Some scratching on the finish, but nothing obviously fatal (except maybe that bolt handle…)
If you all would be so kind as to walk me down this road I’d be truly grateful. My father speaks very fondly of shooting his pellet gun as a boy, and while I’m not sure if this is the same rifle I think he’d love to see it up and running anyway.
I should be able to get some pictures of it this weekend if that'll help.

Most 140s have the bolt attached to the "chamber cover" with a screw and slide back and forth with it.... That may be the reason you don't have a "bolt handle", perhaps the screw is just missing.... The common style look like this....
A strong 140 should shoot about 650ish fps at 10 pumps.... but could be easily be 5% (30 fps) either side of that.... If it's more like 500ish at 10 pumps, it needs some TLC.... Dry firing it won't hurt it....

I'm so sorry to have posted and ran, but they cut me off from you guys at work, and my wife has had me tied down with honey do's. I'm over at my folks house for Mother's day though and I'll get those pics now.
