Glad to hear you got spared Jeff.
Having been through Gloria when I lived near the bay in Amityville, I know how bad it can get there on the Island. That one realy tore up our area with trees through houses and power out in some areas for close to two weeks (only three days for us.) However, I was one of the lucky ones. Only damage to my place was two large branches come down on a back yard tree that I had been thinking of having cut off because they were shading a garden.
And it was realy cool to step outside into dead calm and be able to look straight up into the eye of the storm as Gloria passed over.

Paul, I remember Gloria very well. I did the same thing you did. The eye of the storm passed directly over us and it was just awesome to stand outside and look up into the beautiful clear, sunny, windless sky that only moments prior had been dark, rainy, evil looking with unbelievable wind. I worked a double shift during that hurricane, not by choice - they wouldn't let us go home, and the destruction I saw during my shifts was just scary.

We were driving from NJ to SC as Gloria came up the coast, It was really rough driving but we were determined to make as much headway as we could. We got into Maryland and everything just stopped, clear skies and no wind. About 20 min. later, we were back in it and it was twice as bad as the leading edge. It hadn't occurred to us that we were in the eye, at least not till we got slammed again!

I remember Gloria and 1 or 2 others in the late 70's, early-mid 80's where I stood under the (evil) eye of the storm. It was earie calm after all that pandemonium.. and then an hour or 2 later after the eye passed it started all over again. That was some experience.
Jeff nothing to worry about. I could see at least 4-6hrs before on the radar that it wasn't going to hit LI. I knew the cold front from the west would push it back east or northeast.
When I post on threads like this, you can start worrying. If you don't see my post, no worries
Just in case I have a new 110mph roof on the house. I may not have any windows when a hurricane comes, but I should have a roof on my head
