This!  Totally agree.  Even if nothing ever happens, I consider most of it enjoyable anyway.  Bikes, backpacking gear, training, weapons, foraging, NV, portable HAM radios, solar, coordinating with local like-minded people, etc are all fun by themselves.  I'm not saying it isn't necessary, just that if nothing bad ever happens I'll still enjoy the process.

I am so grateful for my childhood and the way I was raised. Always outdoors and learning basic skills for survival. Camping, fishing, hunting/gathering and food processing. Dad bought an acre in the mountains above the Allegheny River in Pa. and we cleared that land and built a 24 x 24 cabin. I experienced every aspect of building a home from ground up beginning with a basic shelter withstanding all 4 seasons. I've spent my entire life in rural settings near water and woods. Dad taught us how to do our own repairs on everything mechanical.
These are the skills that will be needed if it does all goes to h3ll in a hand basket. These are the skills and respect that society needs to hang on to and teach their children. But unfortunately they are learning to take instead if earn.

You said exactly what I was thinking while reading through this thread. If something happens leaving you only enough time to grab a bag on the way out the door I'm pretty sure nothing in that bag is gonna solve your problem. I'm probably in a better shape to shelter in place and take my stand right here. A pantry full of can goods and bottled water is more likely a better option than anything you can carry... beside.. where ya going? For me, I'm already in the woods and I can promise you, I know them much better than you do.

You would not believe how many city people are buying up property up where I live but don't have the slightest idea on how to survive here. Only 2 sources of water, the town well where I get my water about once a month and rain water catchment tanks. If I had a metal roof instead of a asphalt tile roof I probably wouldn't need to haul water.

There's no electricity or NG or even telephone wires.

Yeah, it's the same here, scrape off the trees to bare dirt and cover in grass, see how that taste. So now all the critters move in with ya, you fry in the summer or get flatten by a hurricane with no trees, Nothing to eat, no shelter, lets see how long you are going to last when it's all over.

Gosh, I take a few days away and there's some fun drama resulting in the OP getting banned.  Not a surprise after looking through the posts created by said individual.

I ain't worried about SHTF.  My current home has the stuff we need to live short term or long.  Our quonset hut a couple hours west is far better, of course, and has essentially unlimited water thanks to the property's northern line is the middle-upper James River.  Food... heh, my wife and I know things.  Wetwipes?  Bah, use Lamb's Ear.  Nature provides all kinds of good stuff.

I always consider SHTF as a mental exercise, or perhaps a n imaginary and long-term solo wargame.  With the latest tech used by militaries (autonomous drones, both air- and land-based) anything short of a material rifle ain't enough if some honest-bad stuff goes down.  TBH, I'm not concerned at all.  As people keep buying prepper gear, I keep watching my portfolio grow.  About the only thing that would impact everyone's lives would be so cataclysmic that nobody wins in the end.
