Pellet as can opener?

I shot a nested pair of soup cans placed so that the round end faced me. Offhand, open sights, from 45’ and then 50’.

The first shot cut open a half-moon kinda flap. Never had that happen before. A couple pellets later, another one cut open a smaller one. See photo below. I think that inner ring in the can must have been made with too abrupt an edge, maybe.  ??

The two pellet indents on the smaller half-moon were from later shots.

Back when I still drank beer from aluminum cans, I would buy those wide mouth coors and miller light aluminum bottles with the screw on cap. If you fill them full of water, and manage to hit the can dead center, you can pop the cap straight up off the bottle. I only drink beer from a glass bottle these days, and they are way too messy to shoot.

A guy called TKOR (The King of Random) posted videos showing how to make your own exploding bottles using bicycle (or automotive) tube valves that allow pressurizing the bottle with an ordinary hand pump. A companion video shows how to make DIY blowdart guns—his demos of using both inventions are really impressive.

 I upped the game and used a tire valve in a plastic vodka bottle, maxed out my shop compressor to fill 125 psi, took a direct hit from a 20+ fpe gun to make it go boom, when it did I could only find 1/2 the bottle, 2 years later I found the other 1/2.

I hope your neighbors aren’t too close. TKOR got in big trouble for using “explosives” in his suburban yard. I don’t know if the device in the above video triggered (oops) the complaint, because he has made many videos of things people might complain about. As part of his making amends, a major corporation offered him funding to invent ways to help humankind. Hence, the videos on foraging for wild grain to grind into a paste with just water and cook over coals. Hmmmm. I see a ways that this, too, could be misused. So anyway, somebody saw what a creative, smart guy could do other than making things that explode or make loud sounds.

R.I.P. to the kid at heart. He died in some air-related accident.

Makes me grateful to have more distance from neighbors, and a local tolerance for target practice in general.

Follow-up on the titular OP:  I shot the same can last night and the third pellet to hit it cut out the entire inner circle! Will shoot another can of the same soup sometime and see if the same thing happens. The pellet that hit dead-center only indented it and blew off the paster “nose”, so it has to be the edge of the inner ring that’s the weak point.

Will shoot another can of the same soup sometime and see if the same thing happens. Slightly less likely than being in a SHTF situation and needing to use a rock to punch open the end if there’s no tab on it.

  I'm a tin can shooter for most of my life.  Most steel cans don't go in the trash until they have enough holes in them.   A .25cal 28g Hunter Extreme pellet shooting around 800fps opens cans really well at about 40 yards.  My daughter shot these with my Disco carbine build this past weekend.
