Hatsan Edge W/Crosman Nitro Piston vs Hatsan 125TH Spring Piston at 35 yards
A.K.A. Tommy Boy:
I did a little shooting this afternoon with the .25 caliber Hatsan Edge and the .25 caliber Hatsan 125 TH.
I had a small amount left in a tin, maybe a dozen, of Eunjin 43.2 gr .25 caliber pointed pellets. They are now sold as Seneca brand pellets.
I decided to shoot them up and see what they did in these rifles.
Both rifles are sighted in with .25 caliber H&N FTT 20.06 gr domed pellets so I knew that the scopes would not be on zero for point of impact.
I did not bother with readjusting the scopes as I only had a small amount of these pellets left in this tin..
As expect my first shot with both rifles was low and they were also to the right.
I took these shots by aiming high and left, guess-timating where the pellets would hit.
The target was a 2 inch B&C stick on target placed on a heavy duty B&C 44 mag spinner.
I was shooting off-hand and guess-timating each shot based on the hit of the previous shot.
All things considered.. I don't think I did too badly today.
Best Wishes - Tom
Note:
Installing mikeyb's Crosman Nitro Piston in the Edge after the Hastan Vortex Piston failed, really upped the power output in the Edge.
It has more power now than it ever did, even when it was new.
With the Nitro Piston installed, the cocking force is right up there with my two Hatsan 125's
I don't have a chronograph so I can't give any difference in velocity information.
Mossonarock:
the piston on my Edge needs replaced. Nice to know the Crosman one works. Thanks. I really liked that gun when it was working.
trying to get a piston from Hatsan is such a hassle.
I'm guessing this is the one?:

Looks correct, but Crosman was selling them for <$12. Last time I ordered several NP1s, NP2s, some trigger groups, piston seals, breech seals and spacers, and some front sight muzzle breaks the total shipping cost was only $4 ! I have a few Crosman rifles that needed repair/conversion and I wanted the extra NPs for experiments like repairing/converting OTHER rifles like the Hatsan Edge.

Call and request this part number.
BT9M22-00-5A = NP1 gas spring
They may have bumped the last letter for a newer NP1 gas spring version but it will basically be the same part.
Ask for part cost and shipping cost before plunking down $40 + S&H from PA.
Either way you will need to make your own centering bushing/spacer for proper install.
Mossonarock:
thank you for steering me in the right direction. Any tips on how to make a centering bushing?
I have a hand drill and a hack saw. I noticed someone mentioned in another thread that they made one out of aluminum.
I'd be willing to pay someone to make one for me. I have too many irons in the fire as it is.
I've had to lay off from working on my airguns for a couple years.
So it looks like you suggest the NP1. I assume that's the one that kicks up the Edge to similar power as a 125? I won't mind that.

I know Tommy says the NP1 made his edge much more powerful than it was before. I believe that is true, but my only explanation would be the Vortex had been slowly "fading" and the sudden fresh NP1 performance was a shocking improvement. Without repeatable chronograph data the results are purely subjective.
Based on all my measurements of the NP1, Vortex air spring, Edge coil spring, Edge piston & piston-throw, comp-tube diameter, AND repeatable chronograph data, the NP1 with a properly sized spacer may bring a Hatsan Edge rifle back near factory spec in the 18-22 fpe range. It will not bring an Edge rifle up to the 30-34 fpe energy of the Mod125/135 rifles. There is simply not enough energy stored in the NP1 gas spring to make that happen. The swept volume of the Edge and piston mass are also too small. If you could fit a true 34 fpe muzzle energy "spring" inside an Edge it would require two hands to cock, the shot cycle would be SUPER HARSH (bone jarring), linkages and retaining pins would start to BEND, and the rifle would shake itself apart.
The Mod125/135 rifles are LARGE and HEAVY springers designed from the ground up to be 30-34 fpe muzzle energy rifles. The Edge and its siblings were designed to be 18-22 fpe muzzle energy rifles and they can do that very well.
I know Hatsan specs the Edge rifle at 20-24 fpe but those are marketing MAX values. SOME Edge rifles will be that good, but most will be in the 18-22 fpe range.
