Distortion in sight picture due to heat waves
(1/1)
Snatchcan:
I have a couple of questions for those who shoot a lot in very warm conditions. My last couple shooting sessions have been on mostly sunny days in the upper 80's to lower 90's, shooting from the hood of my truck, across open gravel pits at 50 an 100 yards, give or take. While at full magnification aiming at my target I noticed heat waves causing distortion in my sight picture. My question is, how much if at all can this affect accuracy? I didn't notice anything in particular with accuracy when I noticed this phenomenon, but my last session was with a new and unfamiliar gun.
The hood of my truck was very hot, I put a towel down to keep from burning myself. If the heat from the hood of my truck is causing the distortion directly in front of the scope, would the effect on accuracy be more noticeable than say a heat wave distortion right before the target?
Motorhead:
With the heat waves one lacks a definitive POA and sadly really can't do well if shooting for ultimate accuracy.
In the FT game it does effect us some, but we're 55y or less. We use it tho to somewhat read what the wind is doing when no flags or grasses etc are present.

Thanks, it's always good to have another thing to blame for poor shooting! ;)
