Joined in 2012, posted fairly often through 2015 and then just stopped until this last post asking to be removed from GTA.  I really don't understand that; lurking for 8 years and then feels the need to announce that he wants out?

First of all..
Read the rules that you agreed to upon joining the forum. Your posts become the property of the GTA and will not be removed even after you opt out. Why do you think you can only modify your posts for a short period?
Secondly..
There are browsers out there that block the ads and they have been discussed here many times. Brave is the one I use and I don't see add one.
Finally..
Why do folks feel the need to announce their departure? Just stop coming. Stop reading. Stop replying. Stop logging on.
The forum was sold and bought. The new owner is well within his/her rights to do with as he/she pleases. This owner chose to seek financial support from vendors through advertising. I have leaned so much, met so many great like-minded people and saved a ton of money doing something I love doing and never paid a red cent for those benefits.
So, pull your pants up and go home but unfortunately, you can't take your ball with you.

Yes, the forum has been commercialized; without doubt-however the folks posting shtuff are what I'm interested in, and they haven't changed-so maybe take the good with the bad, and try to enjoy the airgun fun?...

Yup. I use the FireFox browser with the free "Ghostery-Private AdBlocker" from the FireFox Add-ons and themes. No adds here.

Yes, that was a good analogy!

With the GTA you can check-in and leave your mark, but you can never really leave once you do.  I hope the OP finds what he is looking for.

I sometimes wonder what happened to Wayne52, Knifemaker and some others like Tracker1955 and Dairyboy.  I hope they are all okay.

That's exactly the reason there is a time limit on modifying posts.. some people actually did delete their posts and yes, they left lots of holes.
