What is the correct way to shut down a compressor?
Bladebum:
So there's been some great feedback in here that I appreciate. Really I have just heard that it was better for the compressor to be shut off under load. But like presented here by a some replys, what about the auto shut offs on alot of compressors? What is the ACTUAL damage caused?
I think going forward I will just be shutting down, closing tank valve and degassing.

On water cooled compressors I'll leave the water pump on for a period of time after shutting the compressor down. Most have temp gauge that you can watch go down to a reasonable temp.
On dry compressors (fan cooled) I'll let the fans run after shut down.

1. Have both bleed valves open when turning on compressor.
2. Shut both bleed valves at same time and fill to pressure.
3. Open both bleed valves at same time, then turn off compressor.

The above is the same procedure I started using, maybe I saw the same video.
Prior to that, I was just shutting down, then bleeding.
I think I was convinced that the high pressure piston seal was "happier" creating pulses of high pressure air, rather than having static high pressure sitting on it. Since my first high pressure seal died an early death ( <1 hour total) for no observable reason, keeping it happy became high priority. The new seal is probably getting close to an hour of use by now -- it is hard to keep track when guns fill in under a minute each time.
