Advice On Keeping Or Getting A New PCP

I've had a Umarex Gauntlet .22 for three years and it has less than a tin of pellets through it.  It's on its fourth bottle because the first three wouldn't hold air.  Umarex replaced each of them. On the fourth bottle,  in order for it to work, I have to screw it all the way in.  Which means the gauge and fill probe aren't in alignment for the shroud to go on.   At this point, I've lost confidence in Umarex's quality.  Is there a way to fix this?  With two kids in college, an FX isn't in the budget.  However, thinking of cutting my losses and getting something else.  It's another entry level regulated PCP, but anybody here have long term experience with the WOOD stock version of the Air Venturi Avenger? Any other suggestions for a regulated PCP?

I would give Haji try first before throwing the towel. He specializes in Gauntlets and maybe able to fix yours. At least give him a try. Good luck.

Hey Eddie!
 I have read through your post and I am certain you and I can get your Gauntlet working as intended. First I would suggest that you degas the rifle and tighten the bottle all the way in, then loosen the bottle so the fill nipple lines up with the first opening, left side or right side but it must be whichever comes up first, then fill the rifle and try again. This procedure is detailed in your owner's manual for reference.

To help me diagnose any other regulator/bottle issues it would be most helpful if you could post a photo of your Gauntlet from either side that shows the regulator and bottle interface to the Gauntlet. A photo with the bottle shroud off would be even better.

As for leaks, am I correct in my understanding that Gauntlet number four has no leaks? If there are leaks, please describe what you have tried thus far to narrow down where the issue may be.

First picture:  Air tank all the way in and will fire.
Second Picture:  Air tank backed off so shroud will go on.  All that is heard is the hammer clicking.

Oh, so far, the bottle is holding air.

Degas the bottle then took it off.  Screwed it back on all the way then turned it back just enough for the air gauge and fill nipple to clear the shroud.  As I was letting the hand pump cool, I noticed it was leaking air.  So, I repeated  each step and it's losing air again. Ugh!  What steps should be taken next?

have you tried putting some silicone lube on the Regulator O-rings, it may be that the surfaces are to dry or it may be a scratch on the inner surface of the drop block, try lubing the O-rings first with Silicone oil or Silicone grease.

This MAY or MAY not having anything to do with anything but I opened the bonnet on my Gauntlet and the pin that depresses, the spring and some of the Belleville were corroded,
/Rusty.  I sanded mine.  Could that be causing you to loose air.  I think if the pin is not moving freely as it should , that could cause some air flow problems.

that shouldn't cause a leak, might cause the regulator from working right, but no leak, I suspect the O-rings not seating properly due to lack of lubrication or it may have a defective drop block

Customer Service sent a shipping label so they could look at the gun.  Hats off to them for doing that.  Will let ya folks know once I hear from them.

I couldn't get my original Gauntlet bottle to stop leaking. I wound up purchasing the larger bottle from Hajimoto and could not be happier. So far, the rifle shoots perfect and holds air. Lots of shots for the .177. A big plus is it has an adjustable collar so you can tighten the bottle up and position the gauge and fill nipple properly.

Cool! Something to consider.  Umarex notified me via email that the gun is being shipped back and should arrive on the 20th.  They didn't say what repairs were done but it was done without charge (shipping both ways too).  Perhaps they will include paperwork detailing what was done.   I'm thinking really hard about ordering a compressor and that would make the larger bottle manageable. Will update once it arrives....

Well,  the Gauntlet arrived back from Umarex with a note stating the technician found nothing wrong with the rifle . It also had instructions on how to install and fill the tank.  After taking the Gauntlet out of the box, I proceeded to pump air into it.  At 1300 psi, I took a break to let the pump cool down. Twenty minutes later, I was about to start pumping again then noticed it had lost 400psi.  The gun was degased and the bottle was removed then reinstalled exactly how the instructions read.   Put about 1000psi in it, then ran some errands and when I got home it was empty.    The question now is whether to send it to Hajimoto or get a new air rifle.

Remove the bottle and pump it up by itself, see if it hold air without being attached to the gun, this will tell you if the bottle is leaking or the gun is leaking.
use soapy water to check all fittings on the bottle for leaks
it also sounds like either the pin valve on the regulator is too short/broken, or the depressor pin in the drop block is too short/broken, I had one of the regulator pin valves break on one of my Gauntlets before, that's one of the reasons why I decided to modify to a Carbon Bottle

I've had some pretty bad experiences with Umarex USA.   This doesn't surprise me one bit.
