Did Cross/Benjamin give up on break barrels?

<< < (4/4)

Blowpipe Sam:
As you can see from my signature I'm sort of a Crosman enthusiast.  I've had a closet full of break barrel air rifles over the years.  Got rid of most.  I kept the Hatsans and the Crosmans.  One of my .177 Crosman Fires resides in a Prowler stock, it's had the roller bearing mod, and is simply the easiest springer to shoot I have ever owned.  The Shockwave is a .22 tack driver but a previous owner had to shorten it to about 11" of barrel to get it there.  IMO the quality of the Crosman break barrels is superior to the Hatsan,  Umarex, and Daisy offerings.

The proviso is that in the end these are still Chinese break barrels and Chinese break barrels deserve their awful reputation.  I've had a couple of duds from Crosman but I've never owned a really satisfactory Umarex, Gamo, or Daisy break barrel so it's all relative.

The barrels are probably the biggest issue that Crosman neglected. When you make a bunch of rifles that are suspect in accuracy, it's hard to come back from that reputation.

My Crosman Venom is one of my nicest springers, once the (.22, 650 fps) barrel was shortened to 12.5" so it would shoot right with 14.3 grain pellets. The barrel lockup is sublime. Locks up like a vault even though it closes like butter with only one finger.

Is the issue the cheaper Crosman break barrels don't have enough power to push the 22 through the longer barrel? I have a 2289 pumper with 14.5" and it does fine...just wondering because I had never heard that before. I have 2 Benjy Prowlers but both pistons cluncked within the 1st few rounds and lost power so I still need to get new pistons and have not shot them in several years. But seems like they shot fine with the full barrel length when they had full power and using a 14.3gr pellet...I have always read that break barrels don't like heavier pellets and in my 177 break barrels I have confirmed this.

I have had pretty good luck with Crosman break barrels over the years.
I have a 22cal Redtail that is parked over at my step son's place that is shooting fantastic and quiet too.
I has a 117cal Vantage that did well for 8 years. It was still shooting well when I sold it a couple of years back.
I sold that Vantage to buddyb along with a 1st generation 22cal Benjamin Trail NPXL 1100.
They were both good accurate shooters and were shooting at full power.
Last Fall and and Winter, I took my fair share of small game with the 22cal Crosman Summit Ranger and the 22cal Crosman Diamondback.
I lost track of Gray Squirrels at around 25 but there were more than that.
The 22cal Umarex Surge Max Elite Did well too.
After 7 years, I finally had to replace the Vortex gas spring in the 25cal/22cal Edge this year.
Thanks to mikeyb... I have it up and running now with a Crosman Nitro piston conversion.
The Striker is the same age as the Edge and so far it is still shooting well.
As always, the spring powered 25cal Hatsan 125TH and 22cal Walther Talon Magnum (Hatsan 125)are at the top of their game.

Wow...I must be the exception I guess.

Best Wishes - Tom
