In an effort to quiet them down, I am remaking some of my steel targets with much thicker steel. So with field target in mind, for unsupported standing offhand, what diameter target would I likely face at 45 yards? I have been told 2 inch and another said 40mm. I live in so Cal. If that matters. What say you?
Thanks,  Mike

If you look in the field target gate, there is a Troyer scale thread. It needs to be updated because the photobucket stuff is all gone. But in reply #9 this link appears:

Lots of good information there. Look at " Troyer chart rifle"

Offhand gets .75+ troyer value ... So  At 45 yards ...
Yea a 40mm or 1.57" is @32 & corrected @ 56 troyer and just on the edge of legal. ( 60 troyer max allowed ) & a High Expert rating
At 2" your @22.5 & corrected @ 39.4 troyer being a low Expert rating.

Both being Very Very difficult shots for most !

True that Scott.
You are a well practiced and accomplished competitor,  and I hear that you have your rifle tuned by the best tuner in the country.
I think that anything over 30 is hard.

As per rule 2.5.1 of the World Field Target Federation's Rulebook, positional targets (and that includes offhand), must not be placed farther than 40 meters (44 yards) for a 40 mm's Kill-Zone.

And that is considered a very hard target out in the field.
By Olympic standards it is not that small, but the wind, the light, and the uneven-ness of the standing location (usually MD's will place offhand shots where the shooting box would place the shooters' feet positions at strange distances, angles and unlevel) makes for a very hard target to hit.

I have a target made for 10 M offhand practice that gets used a lot during winter. The K-Z was drilled with a 10.5 mm's drill bit.

;-)

Good luck and keep us posted!
