Duckster:
You could also try using a 6 o'clock hold

I use a shoot n see splatter type target but the open sights blend in with that black. any suggestions? I’m shooting a 1701P Crosman with LPA REar and standard front blade.

Go to the shooting match gates and look at the targets there. You can download and print the ones you like.

I use this one for my 10m shooting.

Doesn’t take long to fall in love with the 1701p. I have the same sights you. 500fps with a 7.0 gr pellet cuts nice holes.

I have a set of walnut grips inbound!

I’ve only had mine a few weeks so I haven’t shot it a lot. Currently it is scoped with a LDC for deer hunting this Saturday. I plan to have a response to the red squirrels that think they own my deer stand.

Hoosier Daddy:
For me the 6:00 hold is best.
I want to see the 10 ring, not cover it up.

I also prefer the target Struckat posted.  ;)

re: Painting the front sight.
I got a front sight paint from the local gun shop.
A BRIGHT color or white, finger nail polish will work just fine.  And it is easier to find.
Important, CLEAN the back of the sight well, or whatever you use won't stick for very long.

IF you are really interested in 10 meter shooting, there is another sight option, the "sub-6" hold.
It is kinda similar to the 6 o-clock hold, but instead of putting the front sight right at the 6 o-clock position of the bull, you leave a gap between the bull and front sight.
The size of that gap is the same as the "white" on both sides of your front sight.
If you have never used it, it can be hard to adjust to.  It was for me.  But now I shoot it with no problem.

On some older guns, there may not be enough elevation adjustment to use this sight picture.

I have found if you use whiteout first and then paint over it the color is much brighter. The Birchwood- Casey sight paint pens work really well as a topcoat. The bright green works really well on the front sight. Shows up well on almost any color target. I usually put a coat of clear nail polish over it to protect it from oil or rubbing off.
