Special Tool for Changing Cup Seal Crosman 1400

I have read that it takes a "special tool" to change the pump cup seal on the Crosman 1400.

I also see that Mac1 offers an oring replacement set up for the same.

What does the "special tool" look like?

Where would I get one?

Can I easily make this tool? (full machine shop available)

What does Precision Pellet offer? (Cost?) I'll be ordering a safety and barrel separator from him anyway.

In short, for me, the guy who over-analyzes everything, what are the pros and cons of the different repair approaches?

Macs kit with his piston and O-Ring is pretty easy to swap, he has a video on his page, you just cut/score the old brass ring and cup(Dremel)break off and punch back in the Piston on the aluminum rod, advantage is replaceable Oring and some users claim a bit more power, I have two of this kits but didn't have to swap the cup on my 140 and the second still waiting to be installed on a 147, so I personally can't tell about power increase.

Rick over at Precision sells his kits with original cups, advantage, you keep the air gun as original as possible, but its a bit more difficult to remove the brass ring especially it you don't have the best working condition and /or tools: Although with Ricks method( I'm yet to try),-that he was kind enough to explain to me over the phone- all you need is a properly installed Vise and flat screwdriver, remove as much Cup rubber as possible, place and hold aluminum rod tight on a the vise with brass looking up, and slip the flat screwdriver in gap created between the Brass ring and the aluminum washer (where the rubber cup was), and then twist the screw driver up and down to slowly slip/slide up the brass ring away from the aluminum rod. 


The other method is using a properly sized Washer (pain to find) and making a cut out. You sideslip the washer under the cup/brass ring in same location as described above, then place it on a Vise with only enough clearance to hold the Washer in place, and then center-punch the rod down as the brass ring slips out over the top.

 I don't have a 1400. I do know  there pump is the same as a 102/101,  guess in the valve is also

Rick@Precision Pellet  will tell you all about it.I would do the valve also   he'll tell you how  to make  the  tool  to remove the valve.  you'll  need  a   1/2" od  x  3/8" id    8" +long piece of tubing / pipe.   if you can't find  3/8 id   then drill out the tubing id to 3/8 +  before  cutting the end into a spanner wrench

I'm leaning toward the factory style for future serviceability, though that seal on mine seems to be original and still OK.

Check the pump cup very well, if it has any side scratches or missing a little piece at the front end it should be replaced, it should be very flexible, if it is stiff/brittle with age replace it now that the airgun is apart, my first reseal ever was my older 140 with probably original cup, I bought a cheap kit without the pump cup, I didn't know much so thought I didn't need one. well it shoots like 100+ FPS below my second resealed 140 , so one of this days I need to get back in there again and install a new cup or piston..

Also replace all the valve's O ring seals now too, and make sure the valve is clean in and out, get some 'Secret sauce' oil from Mac to oil all the parts and the new O rings before installing, the oils extend their lifespan...

These show  the pump rod/piston that was in this 102.  in talking with rick today ( @ PP ) He thinks it's   lastest version for a 1400  and it is  new ish-er.

The cup is like a rock !  When installed,  the rod just looked wrong?To new and clean, The gun was like a old VW motor,  when pumping  The piston would show to the top of the cup. Rods  WRONG !! to short!

Rick..says...yep, people would buy new 1400 Assembly's   cheaper than  a 102 unit

problem: the 1400 is 1/2" shorter   than a 102 rod. LOLOL   it was  easier to push the handle  down ,  Than to pull it up


The nuts =  spanner  pipe thing = tool

And Then ..  why the tube has to be sized  Before   making the teeth/cogs.  it was not fun drilling the center hole with 2 pieces of steel grabbibg the drill bit

I'm planning to replace all the seals as well as a general refurb (broken/ missing parts).

The only thing I'm not planning to do at this point is the cosmetic stuff- refinish stocks, bluing, paint trigger guard- that kinda stuff.

The nut (that requires the custom spanner) holds the valve in, and somebody seems to have installed the wrong valve in you 102. They used a 1400 valve?

Or is the spanner nut somehow part of a mod that you have to do to get the stroke length right, since someone put a wrong part in your gun?

Thats the correct valve for a  102 and 101. yes the tool is for removing a nut the holds it in place. These is two nuts.

The tool has nothing to do with the pump rod.

Does this pump rod/piston  look like yours ?    It'S  6 7/8"  long

Mine looks like that, but its OAL is roughly 7.2"
