Benjamin Trail NP wont shoot through a 2-liter soda bottle
« on: March 06, 2011, 10:35:13 PM »
Help me out here, do I have a lemon? I thought this gun was suppose to be powerful.  ???

I've shot soda cans, they went clean through. I shot a gallon milk container. Went clean through. When I shoot a 2 liter plastic bottle at 10 yards, they dont even puncture it and ricochette back at me. I'm using crosman domeds, benjamin hollowpoints and RWS super domed. All do not puncture the plastic bottle. My gamo silent cat .177 cuts through the 2 liter everytime with no problem using domes and hollowpoints.

This is a brand new benjamin trail NP .22 (not the XL) and I'm not too happy. First upon opening, there was oil smeared on top of the barrel near the breech. On my 3rd shot with the gun, it jammed using benjamin discovery .22 pellets. After unjamming, it did it again with another pellet. I switched to RWS domed and no problems. Went back to using the benjamins was fine for a bit and then another jam. The *(&^??

Should I return this gun and get a new one? The constant jamming is making me angry and its disappointing I cant even shoot through plastic. Other than that, its a nice gun. Any advice? This is my first .22 and my first post on this site. Thank you.

-Ryan

Are you saying that you're getting pellets jammed in the barrel? If so, and it doesn't have enough oomph to pierce a plastic bottle 10 yds away, I'd check it with a chrony if at all possible. Sounds like you got a weak one.

Send it back, where did you get it from?

I am not sure what you mean by jamming.  However, sounds like either a bad seal or bad nitrogen piston.  Send it to Crosman and they will make it all better.

Hey guys, thanks for writing back.

I dont have a chrony but they may have one at the range, i can check. My gut feeling is something is wrong and it is quite weak and definitely not what I was expecting from all the praise this gun gets.

Send it back, where did you get it from?
I got it from Trophys outdoors.com. They take returns so I should be able to swap it for a new one. I'll probably do that.

I am not sure what you mean by jamming.  However, sounds like either a bad seal or bad nitrogen piston.  Send it to Crosman and they will make it all better.

Maybe the jamming term is incorrect. Basically when I shoot it makes a muffling sound and you can hear the air stuttering out from somewhere. When I look into the barrel the pellet has slightly moved forward. Not much, but by some. Like it didnt have enough air to push it through, who knows? I think I might send it back to where I got it from.

It sounds to me like a bad seal. I would return it for a new one. If the seal is bad and the piston is slamming the end of the chamber, who knows what other damage there might be.

Check to see if the breach seal is OK. Either way, I'd  replace it.

thank you guys. The seal appears to look ok to me but I'm no expert. There's definitely something wrong with the gun though and I am in the process of returning it. Hopefully the new one will be fine.

I heard from Mike Melick and others that the Benji Disc pellets are under sized. MM warned me not to shoot them in my custom B-25 when he sends it to me. That's OK. All that I shoot are JSB's and Crow Mags. The cheap stuff is too inconsistent for me. I don't shoot cheap russian ammo out of my custom 223 varmint gun either.

The benji disc pellets were the ones that were giving me trouble. They were the ones that got stuck and to be honest I feel were a bit hard to load in. The RWS super domes were working great, i shot about 50 of them without any getting stuck. Still though, they are not puncturing through the plastic soda bottle so I think I got a weak gun.

Looking forward to the new one, I have faith this is a really nice gun.

Here's a quick test of the breech seal.  Get a single ply of tissue and sit it on top of the breech, then shoot the gun (with a pellet in the barrel, of course).  If the tissue puffs up, you have a bad breech seal.  If not, there is something radically wrong with the gun (i.e. - piston seal shot).  Is the shot cycle really harsh at the finish?  Even an undersized pellet should clear the bore.

As to pellets bouncing off of soda bottles, they might, even with full power.  Those bottles are designed to be very resilient.

Mine shoots through 1/2" plywood and has gone through 3/4" pine.....makes me want to see if a 2 liter bottle gives me trouble..hmm!

My Trail blows right through them at 10 yds. At 20, I can pour out the water and recover the pellet. Kind of a fun way to test pellet expansion.

Problem is either the piston seal or nitro ram....and a very rare chance that it might be the breech seal.  If the breech seal leaks the air should still be able to push the pellet out of the barrel.

Had that happen with my Hammerli Titan...I would get a "Bang" when I squeezed the trigger but the pellet remained inside the breech...didn't even move a millimeter.  Turned out to be a very defective piston seal...It was a display model and I think more than a few customers or even the owner/salesmen dry-fired it.

Btw...my .177 Hammerli Titan (A springer) shoots pellet right through 2 liter plastic softdrink bottles at 20+ yards.

Thanks for the replys everyone. Trophys Outdoors customer service is out until Monday. I'll give Crosman another call tomorrow to see if I can get a replacement.

I tried the tissue test tonight and it did not puff up. Of the 20 I shot tonight, none of the pellets got jammed. Still, it should be able to shoot through a 2 liter plastic bottle, my silent cat .177 tears right through them with no problem at 30 yards.

Mine shoots through 1/2" plywood and has gone through 3/4" pine.....makes me want to see if a 2 liter bottle gives me trouble..hmm!

You should, but just in case, make sure you stay safe. Mine ricochette off the plastic bottle each time.

My Trail blows right through them at 10 yds. At 20, I can pour out the water and recover the pellet. Kind of a fun way to test pellet expansion.

Ah good to know, I knew it should be able to do it. Unless mountain dews bottle are a lot stronger for some reason, haha.

When the pellet does get stuck, the benji doesnt make a loud bang, but more of a muffle stuttering of air. I can also hear something inside that kind of rattles/stutters when it does happen, maybe the piston? Its random when it does it. I shot 20 pellets tonight and it didnt do it once. But it wont shoot through the bottle everytime. I believe that your Titan can shoot right through the bottles, my silent cat 177 does as well.

I'm going with a bad gas piston. Let us know if you take it apart, but be sure it's still in returnable condition.

Just thought I would give an update. I ended up returning the defective gun and got a new one. Much happier now. Right away I could tell differences, the cocking effort was much stronger and upon shooting it was definitely more powerful and faster than the first one I had. And...yes it easily punctured through the plastic bottle this time.

A very nice gun and accurate too. Love the NP, no more vibration! I think I like it more than my silent cat. Thanks again for all your help.
