Challenger Plainsman .22 pumper. 1st ever disassembly?
«

Hey guys!! Ok i just recently purchased the rare Plainsman .22 pumper. I could see how dirty she was looking at the linkage. So i think after 60 years its time she gets a good cleaning. I haven't come across another disassembly on a Plainsman. So let's get this done! Nitrile gloves...check. Tools...check. Paper towels...check.
Ok remove the 1 screw holding grip frame to tube and barrel, just forward of the trigger guard. The whole frame slides out leaving the trigger assembly attached to the pump tube. You will notice 3 holes at the bottom where the grip frame was. From muzzle to back oh the pistol. 1st hole is where i just took out the screw. Second hole has a flat head screw (guessing this secures the valve in the tube. 3rd hole of unknown purpose?

Next step removing the hammer from tube. The end cap where the cocking knob goes through, unscrews. You have to slide the breech knob back or end cap runs into it. Unscrew cap and slide out end cap with pull cocking knob attached. Now the hammer will hit the trigger contact. Squeeze the trigger to get past it. Now this whole assembly is attached the the cocking knob, end cap, spring and the hammer. Its one piece i cant get the actual hammer off the knob.

Next step get the pump arm and piston out. Little punch and a hammer will do it. The solid pin goes in and out only 1 direction. Look at the pin and u can see why. Groves on the one end of the pin. Where is that quality Crosman. Once out u have to remove the ALL metal barrel band. Cough cough. Takes a little wiggling its been there for 60yrs, done. Now to slide out the pump arm and piston. Be careful little twist and slowly slide her out. The pin hole was nicely deburred from factory id assume. Dunzo!! Oh yea notice the flat top piston and valve w/ adjustable piston from factory. Cough other, cough, airgun makers, cough.

Now to get the valve and barrel off. This is where i need Help. Ok those 3 holes i mentioned earlier there was the screw that attached the grip frame to tube. Then the flathead screw gong into tube. I had assumed that held the valve. I took it out a small but thick grub screw. I can look and see the brass valve and its been notched for this screw. Now ive tried everything to get the valve out and nothing. Moving to barrel before i hulk smash. Barrel i cant get out. I removed the same grub screw at the top which holds barrel down. The screw goes through the breech and pushes on barrel...simple. Nope. This "breech/rear barrel band" is a part of the tube. Its got "22" stamped on it. Now i can get play in it maybe mm oh twist to it and back and forth. I had looked down the breech to see if maybe there was a transport bushing or piece oh metal. Like on the 1322. Nope nothing.

Now i let it sit over night with oil dropped down on the valve from both sides. I tried again this morning. Got a socket and dropped it repeatedly from both ends and nothing. I tried pushing on the socket nothing. If u notice the pump tube you can see it goes from 3/4" from muzzle side to 1" at the rear. So obviously its only leaving from the back end where the hammer came from. I would assume there is NO transfer port "piece" because there is no way to remove the breech? I tried putting pump arm back in and pumping out the valve. Nope!! Son of Poseidon!! I need help guys.

I have the rifle version. Greg Fuller in SoCal is the best bet for rebuilding the valve. He told me once to imagine the Sheridan Model A valve on steroids.
Did the valve work and hold air before? If so I wouldn't mess with it. If it doesn't hold air, then maybe a few drops of Secret Sauce and work it thru the system a few times a day would drive out debris if thats the problem.
Greg will be at the Pacific Airgun Expo in Placerville in March, if you can wait that long you can talk with him there.

I'm betting it is Soldered in! Try not to get it apart to hard, as it just might mess it up to where you will not get back together again and work.

It hisses air out the muzzle when u pump it. I can cock it pump it and fire air out but if i leave it sit air will just push out. It was dirty in there ive gone throw 5 red disposable mechanic towels. Yea i may have to give him a call up this Fuller guy.
Yes im starting to think the valve and barrel might both be soldered in. Valve doesn't budge a hair. Granted im not smashing on it just been doing the socket drop technique. Now the barrel moves a little. When i look down the hole where the grub screw was that secured the barrel. I thought it looked to be a a section oh threading had broke off. Now that u said it im starting to think it may be a spot soldered. Cause lve tried to use a small pick to see if i could sweep it out but it dont move. It moves ever so slightly with the barrel movement. Hmm ok so im gonna finish cleaning out all the gunk in here. Im guessing why its hissing is too much black gunk and its not letting it seal properly.

Thank The Lord!! She is up and running. Gave her a solid cleaning, all gunk from all corners, nooks, crannies. Gave a niceeee oil bath. Did everything in reverse order. Gave a few more drops down and around pump cup. Fired it several times and we had gunk fire out on a paper. She was holding air. So i proceeded with my first 5 shot group. First shot was low only had 2 pumps in. Went 4 pumps for other 4 shots. I used Benjamin HP's 14.3's. Yessss she shoots the Benjis well! My other 3 like the crosman HP better.

Rob, the barrel is threaded into the cast receiver part (may have shellac sealer in the threads, can't recall for sure). Normally there's no reason to remove it when repairing these. The valve is held in place by the setscrew you removed in the same hole as the grip-frame retainer screw. Most likely your valve is simply glued in place by decades of dried oil & gunk. Glad to read that you got it working without having to deal with the valve innards; they can be a giant pain to try to reseal.
