Scope Mounting Issues

I am having a *(&^ of a time getting a Hawke 4-16X44 Varmint SF to mount or stay mounted to my XS28M.

Right now I have a one piece mount that seems to hold everything well but shoots low so I need to use the droop compensating mount.  The big problem right now is the gun shoots to the Right far enough that I do not have enough windage adjustment to get things centered.  The open sights that came on the gun have the same windage issues.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?  The rail on the gun seems straight so I do not think that is the issue but have no idea at this point.  Is there an adjustable mount somewhere that I could mount to over come the problems?

Hi, I had the same issue with my R9.  It was shooting dead on with a Bushnell Sportview on a  2 piece Beeman mount until I replaced it with a Bushnell Legend and it shot really low and to the right.  I tried adjusting the elevation and windage on the Legend and that didn't fix the problem so I ordered a one piece adjustable mount (Beeman 5039, also sold as Sportmatch APO55).  I got the scope mount this morning and played with the adjustment per instruction.  Guess what,  it's shooting dead on once again.  The only thing is, you have to remove the mount (with scope on it) to adjust the elevation but you can adjust the windage without removing it.  It took me 2 tries to get it sighted but what a difference with this new scope.  Hope that helps.  Tony

Based on the above statement you made, I would be suspecting a problem with the gun, not the optics or your mount. In particular, the barrel could be bent. If you had said the stock open sights worked fine, but the scope is shooting right, then we could suspect the scope and/or mount.

If you feel up to it, you can build a barrel bending jig cheaper than a new set of rings. I built one based off the instructions in the library, but I've also seen other designs that work just as well.

It worked well for me, but took a bit of time, as I did not want to bend it too much, so I went little by little.

I hate to say it but you may be right.  It did not seem to suffer any damage in shipping.  I have a 24" Starrett scale I could use as a straight edge but am not sure it would tell me anything I could not see by the naked eye.  I read the thread on barrel bending and it is something I could jig for here in the shop but not without talking to the Dealer first.  It may come to it eventually.

Thanks for the Beeman number for the scope mount.  If the mount will adjust enough to find zero then I can avoid any drastic action.

My first air rifle that i got about a month ago was getting 3-4" groups at 20 yards so I sent it back and i'm getting a new one with a scope. The mount that I will be using is the Sportsmatch AOP55 which is adjustable for windage and elevation.

A lower priced alternative to the more (some, way more!) expensive 2 pc scope mounts are the Sun Optics adjustable scope mounts:



The ones in the link above are for 11mm dovetails but they're also available in weaver. Adjustable for pitch, windage & elevation.

Sun Optics does have adjustable rings.  Amazon has misleading descriptions.  The dovetail rings they describe connect with a model number for Sun Optics Weaver mount rings.  They are also shown a one inch 30mm rings.  Contact Sun Optics for the correct model number before ordering.  Sun responds very well to email communications.

Burris makes their Signature rings and you can get plastic inserts that will allow the 'scope to be move in any direction that is required to center it...

I used them on my Maurader--they need them...

I looked at the Burris mounts as I had used them in the past.  The only issue I have is my Xisico springer seems to hate two piece mounts.

The link to Jason's thread was perfect timing.  Sun has a one piece mount in the medium height which should be correct for the 44mm objective.

They got this thing called gravity. It not worthy. They also mount the glass above the bore by a few inches on average. Add gravity not worthy to barrel below optics and you have SCOPE MOUNT GROUND HOG DAY!

It has been this way forever. AirGuns SHOULD be made with 25 minutes of Droop built into the scope rail, barrel or a barrel bend to that 1/2 degree of angle associated with the fact we don't do infinity speeds or have pellets with bullet like BC's.

Spring Guns should use ONE PIECE MOUNTS. Split rings put all the mounting loads thru the rear ring and abuses the scope tube using it as structure. It just thrashes scopes to use split rings on a recoiling gun as the front mount is rarely Stopped. If the two mounts do not share the load the rear one wants lean back and the front one packs back putting your scopes tube in extreme stress. This translates to shifting POI relative to POA and a BENT scope tube,

Firearms at Mach 4 still must deal with the reality of scope height and Gravity sucking. It means the erector spring on your adjustment assy is backed off from mid tension. I like to provide mounts that will allow you to use all of your Elevation adjust to reach out and shoot far. The guns I make (LD, US FT & HUnter) have 25 minutes of droop built into the rail of the guns. The Edgun and the Steyr when you add their Picitinny rail to the rifle gives you a similar amount of droop. It makes the glass look where the gravity sucking and scope height has made the gun shoot with centered optics at about 10 yards and 70 yards(give or take).

Guns that do not have drooped rails need drooped mounts to have the scope set-up with Extra up instead of using all your Up to get on paper. That is why we sell mounts with varying amounts of droop(20-50 thou per 4" = 5-10 thou per inch ring spread). You do need an adjustment. It doesn't have to be adjustable but that works also as long as it doesn't use a scopes tube as mount structure. Any mount (1 piece or split) that has the rings capable of rotating at the attachment point are JUNK! RWS C-Mount Stands as proof that bad designs can be made for a really long time. Scopes get thrashed by such rubbish. NO structural loads can be put thru the scopes tube without compromising the scopes integrity. They are not made to be mount structure so when the rings rotate the scope tube bends.

When you add shims you almost always bend the scopes tube. We machine the rings so they are still fixed and looking where the gun hits. It is so nice to be within a few clicks of dead nuts when you first mount centered glass straight from the box. The first time that happens you will become a Droop believer in Going Shimless!

When a scope shoots right on at 10 & 70 yards, if you put one more turn of down in, it will shoot about right on at your apogee so you now have an extra turn of up on tap. Running your Scopes elevation adjust return (erector) spring under MORE compression makes the adjustments more positive and very repeatable.

Mac1 carries UTG/Leapers/Centerpoint 1 piece mounts and split rings in 1" and 30MM in 11MM and Picitinny with cut droop. Medium & High. That is a lot of ring possibilities and a huge number of Mounts in various droops ready to go on your gun and take the ARRGGHHH!!! out of scope mounting. We did this for our own sanity but you can get some sanity too.

All Mac1 rings are cut with 4" ring spread but & mount clamps and screws on right. CUSTOM ringspread and droop cuts or SQUAT (shoots high)cuts can be done. We can even make windage adustments if needed.

I just started Cutting WEAVER/Picitinny Mounts with droop. I have lots of split ring high 1" and Quick release medium 30MM with a half degree and 2/3 degree of droop so Gravity and scopes mounted above the bore on parallel rings will not jack you around. It is amazing how many people call and tell me the exact story. "I'm maxed out and I Can't get it up. How much do I shim. ARGHH!!!"

Droop rings are always call shop @ 310-327-3582 so we can assist in the mount selection. They are NOT online because there are too many possibilities to list. Use our experience to make sure you get on target without being Maxed out! I don't think gravity is going to stop sucking anytime soon and it is not likely we will find a new place to put our glass. Just a hunch I'm going with!

Picture shows a gun with narrow ring spread that would require Custom Droop due to the Custom Ring spread and scope mounting. Standard ring spread is 4" CTC but Custom ring spread can be done to your mounts to make a perfect ring set for your particular gun/scope combination. 2240 with HiPac, Custom RB Forearm, steel breech and Mac1 accuracy and Power prep with long barrel etc.
