From working out over the years I have noticed the legs of course are our strongest muscles, a "leg press" pump would be the easiest for a person to work manually, but it would take up a lot of room maybe :-).

Hmm, good use of an old metal shaper (machine) maybe?  Be kinda rough on the pump though.

I actually have a shaper out in the garage :-). That is an interesting idea, the way they work the retraction stroke is faster then the forward stroke.......never thought about building a compressor to mount on the shaper :-)......hmm :-).

Mine is pretty small, 8" stroke maximum maybe, was my dads, he had three of them, I hung onto the little one...the "big" one was 36" stroke and weighed about 4000 lbs.

Im thinking of building something like the shoebox compressor. Keep it straight and stationary while the gears/linkage do the moving.

what you guys think ?

Somebody did a utube video converting a hand pump to a motor driven one similar to your drawing.  You will have to search utube for it.

Look @ the first post lol

What I want to do is model it after the shoebox compressor so that it wont be so long and bulky.

Those are pretty good. the PTO solution is great. The first one looks very professional.

One thought though, none of them did anything to deal with the excessive heat the builds up. having a high speed fan on the bottom of the pump might help.

doesn't the shoebox compressor require a kick start from a regular compressor? that could be an idea for a hand pump as well. get the starting pressure up around 150psi or so. i have a little compressor i got from sears that has a very small tank, but i imagine if it is running it could provide continuous air to feed the input of an other pump.

Been thinking about using a winch instead of all that crazy worm year reducer and that large of a motor... Dont know if a winch motor can work continuous cycles for a few hrs...

a 10 ton Jack and a 2 inch cylinder, 8 inches long.
Would fill Benjamin discovery and in about 15 strokes of pump, depending on the JACK. I think I'll use a floor jack.
Be a much smaller and more compact unit.
Food for thought.

Unless you are looking for a project for fun. If you price out the cost of all the parts for most of the gizmo's its going to be more than the cost of the Shoebox. you can pick up a used shoebox for 400-550 bucks. I am new to the game but knowing how lazy I am I did not fork over the 200+ for a hand pump and watched classified adds on several forms and picked up my older chain drive shoebox for 450 it already had some upgrades to it.
