DIY Range Wind Flag

In the ongoing effort to improve my skills as a benchrest shooter, I have come to recognize the need to improve my abilities as it relates to doping for wind.

I had made some efforts earlier in this regard, adding a wind flag on the bench and adding some simple ribbon flags on the target holder, but did not have much of a picture of what was happening in between. Needed to come up with some flags for the middle of the range.

Looking around on the net, I see a number of vendors selling flags that ranged in price from around $30 to $50 each. Very nice, but as I would need at least two, maybe more, I thought I would see what I could build myself. Here is what I came up with.

The bearing and interface to the stand



The kit broken down for transport



While I haven't had them out to the range, I have set them out in the yard and watched them swing back and forth with the wind.  Seem to be pretty sensitive.

I built two of them, and figure that I have about $7 bucks a piece in them.  Should do the job just fine.  Hope you found this useful.

Pretty cool idea. Those should be visible for a long way. And avacado pits are awesome targets! Bout the same size shape and hardness as a nutters head.

Thanks.  For the record, the ball is actually a plastic egg covered by paper. I came across them at the hobby store and thought they would work for my purposes.

You could use a ping pong ball, plastic easter egg, whatever you have available.
