most accurate pellets for benjamin trail np .22 cal(none XL)
« on: January 30, 2012, 01:58:58 PM »
I am running this poll for me as well as others to decide and have greater first time success in ordering the most accurate pellet for there guns from others who have the same gun and have found there most accurate pellet. I would like other people to post polls and vote on there best pellet for there own specific gun . I think if enough of us post polls on our individual guns we can get a good statistic for everyone on this site to utilize. And save money on ordering pellets with a better chance to get good pellets the first time. I encourage everyone to post a poll or vote on a poll already made for there guns. Mabye if we get enough polls going we can make a individual topic in the site for pellet to gun polls! ;D

Good idea.  I know I have been through so many brands and types of pellets to find what works best in my Trail NP .22.  The H&N FTT 5.53's were by far the most consistent and accurate of any of them.  The Crosman Premier Hollow Points would be almost as good, but they are not consistent in size.

I have got the exact same results.  The FTT work very well in the 5.53 and the crosmans that fit snug fit good also but they are very inconsistent.  Makes me feel good that someone got the exact same results as me.  Oh and the H&N Barracudas with a 5.53 head will also shoot just as well if you are wanting a heavier pellet.

I voted for and use the H&N FTT's but,

Beeman FTS's give the tightest groups in my gun. They are supposed to be the same pellet with the FTS's being copper coated. I thought that this would make them tighter in the bore though they actually seem looser than the FTT's. But I stack them at 15yards.

I don't use them though because the FTT's and PolyMags group the same in my gun and sight the same in my scope. I practice with the FTT's and shoot pest's with the PolyMags. The FTS's give a very slightly better group, but for some reason the group is low left of my crosshairs.

That shows how each gun is different because the polymags do not have the same POI as the FTT's do in my gun.

Does this help?  I just did some pellet testing on my Trail NP All Weather.  These are all 5 shot groups at 21' off a rest - it's clear what the guns preferences are. :P

Row 1, 2, 3, left to right.....

Crosman Premier Hollow Points, Crosman Premier Hunting, Crosman Premier Lights, H&N Baracuda Match, Beeman Crow Magnum

RWS Supuedome, RWS Supermag, Beeman Field Target Special, Beeman Kodiac Hollow Point, Predator Polymag

JSB Exact Express, JSB Exact, JSB Exact Heavy, Crosman Premier Destroyer EX, Crosman Premier Wadcutter

Best pellets are the RWS Superdome, Beeman Field Target Special, JSB Express, Exact, and Jumbo, and the Beeman Crow Magnum.  Crosman Premier Hunting were good too (4/5 in same hole) but their inconsistency might make them an iffy choice - they always seem to have 1-2 fliers in every 5 shots.

WOW that helps a lot thank! but for the sake of the info if you could give a write out of the abbreviations and at what distance you were shooting that would be great! i want this thread to be a go to for questions regarding pellets choice with this gun so everyone can benefit so the more info the merrier. THATS GREAT WORK!

ADDED the beeman FTS's as a choice

That's a surprise about the CPHP's in the survey.  Don't get me wrong, I have seen them shoot good groups at distance, but never the best groups.   :-\

Here is a target I did with my Trail NP .22 using H&N FTT 5.53 pellets.  I shot 5 pellets at each target.  I was shooting off the bench with a bag rest at 20yrds.

one photo is of the 5 pellets I removed from the duct seal on the lower right target.

The worst grouping was .395" CTC and the best was .200" CTC.  I did have one flyer on the lower left target, probably my fault.

My trail shoots the Cphp pellets all over the place, but the RWS superdomes are the best shooting ones i have found so far.

I wonder if its from lack of comparison against other pellets because the premiers are cheap and most available

Exactly!!  I don't think people have the same definition of accurate. For example, the cphp always shoots .50-1" groups out of my guns at 25 yards, with frequent fliers.  That in itself is good enough to head shot a nutter, and by itself -good.

...But get the right pellet in there, and you will see .30" groups at 25 yards - with hardly a flier.  That's good enough for eye shots, lol.

Your Trail NP is capable of .25" groups of 5 at 20 yards with the magic pellet!!! Believe it!

yes i have cphp's and FTT's and just the fitting variation alone in the breech with cphp's is a clear indicator FOR ME AND MY GUN of something better out there. i dont know about other people but thats been my experience

yup, mine too... some tight and some loose.  Not a precise pellet. Every 2-3 is different. I always know too right when I load it that im going to have a flier.

I have a .22 cal Benjamin Trail-NP with the laminated stock that I got for Christmas and I've been trying different pellets recently as well.   I too was wishing for a good poll on what was working well for others, just to narrow down what pellets to try, and I hope to see good participation in the poll.

Well after many hours of getting used to it and breaking it in, (Oh and getting a new scope from Crosman when the first Center-Point wouldn't hold on the verticle), most of this with the cheap Crosman Hollow points from WallyWorld... I was less than happy with the groups and many fliers.

I also noticed the huge difference in pellet consistency with the Crosmans both Premier Hollow point and Premier Domed.  Just loading the pellets from one to another I noticed that some would fall right in and some had to be forced in, with most somewhere in-between.  I measured the heads with my caliper and the heads ranged from .15 to .18 with most at .17 and then the random fliers started to make sense!  It's too bad since they are a good pellet at a good price, just VERY inconsistent, even for plinking.  I had high hopes for these since they had a good rep in the good'ol days when they were all made the same size! ::)

My father-in-laws Crosman GP likes the CPHPs a bit better than mine so they won't go to waste...  Well maybe he just deals with the fliers better than me. ;D  Even for plinking I'd rather have a pellet that had a slightly larger group than one with a flier every 3rd or 4th shot that's well outside the group!

Anyways the best groups I've been able to get with my Trail-NP were with the RWS Super-H-Point pellets.   From a bench at 23 Yards, on a super calm day, I shot (2) sub .25" 3-shot groups that looked like a clover leaf. I really should have gotten a pic. ;D  I had to walk up to the target both times when I couldn't find the holes in the scope! If it hadn't happened twice I would have written it off as a fluke!  I was impressed and WILL be getting some more for hunting the tree rats.  I think I will try the RWS Super-dome pellets as well and see if they have a similar POI and accuracy...

The Super-H-Points also flatten right out on impact and should offer massive energy transfer on the smaller critters.  They might not be the best option though where penetration is needed, but smaller critters are likely a pass through hole with most of the other pellets I've tried.  Hopefully the RWS Super-domes will have a similar POI and accuracy and they should offer the penetration needed for bigger buggers like rabbits+.

To sum it up; I like the RWS Super-H-Point pellets and while I'm not done yet with trying others they are worth a look for accurate small critter hunting pellets.  I just wish they came in a 500ct tin with a screw on lid. I was a bit IRRITATED when I had to dig the loose pellets out of my case when the tin opened up.  Well at least all those Crosman pellets were good for their tins...  I just dumped the RWS pellets in the empty Crosman tin and put the RWS lid in with them so I know what they are; Recycle those tins.

P.S. Why do all of the higher end pellets come in press on friction lid tins anyways?   :P

How do you word it... "Air Guns" or "AirGuns"?
