Hatsan Mod 95 .177 Tune and Results Review
«

As many of you know already that I love to make airguns work smoother, and more efficient and still maintain good accuracy within a normal power range.
Today I did just that on a new Hatsan Mod 95. The tune consisted of converting Mod 95 springer into a very docile gas ram powered break barrel.
First I removed the muzzle break to check the crown. Hatsan had done an excellent job on the crown so I did not mess with it and just put brake back on.
Next I disassembled the gun using a spring compressor. Trigger is a very nice piece of work. The seal was not cut up from installation at factory. But it was a very hard nylon seal which I prefer not to use in most cases. Everything looked good, but there was some deburing to be done on the piston. So I used a combination of mill, dremel and jewelers file to do the work. Cleaned and inspected the piston one last time for any contamination and set aside. Next was the compression chamber. Inspected debured and cleaned. Then did my cross hatching. Cleaned it up and set it aside.
The Quattro trigger did not need any work IMO. Just a couple adjustments and it was right where I liked it.
Next was fitting the new Gas Ram. The process was pretty straight forward and with some measuring I made up the part I need to do the job.
One thing you do not want to forget is deburing the cocking shoe and then lightly polishing it.
Now for the seal. I used a JM seal that was oversized and turned it down to fit the bore just right. To tight in the bore and you end up with a dog...
To loose and you will diesel till the sun goes down...:)l Never ending.
After I finished up the conversion and tune I took her out and shot some targets to check accuracy. I used some CHP pellets at first and ended up with JSB's
Set the target out to 25 yards and set up on my back deck with table and rest. It did not take but two or three shots before I was hitting the bulls dead center for the most pat. After about 20 or so shots in one bulls I switched to another. Same results. Dead on accurate out to at least 20 yards.
The overall cocking and shooting cycle was smooth as glass. The recoil was very low but I could hear a ring in the butt of stock from the SAS front mounting system. Which by the way is an excellent design. Takes the vibration out of the stock.
I think the Hatsan Mod 95 is worth every penny I spent "$147.00". It has more good design work built into it than your typical $400.00 springer. With a bit of TLC it can perform like a $600.00 break barrel.
Great gun for the price I paid and I would not hesitate to buy another model and try it out.
Below you will find pictures of my process.

Nice write-up and great review! I agree with the accuracy...even with stock spring and piston seal. My .22 Mod 95 was advertised with muzzle velocity of 800fps with lead pellets. Out of the box (after 30 break-in shots), mine shot an average of 808 fps. I tore it down, deburred and lubed without honing the cylinder, reassembled (with some coaching from Gene), and after about 20 break-shots, ran it over the chrony and sighted it in with open sights. At 12 yards I was able to group 5 inside a dime with 14.3 gr CPHPs...and the muzzle velocity averaged 818fps....or just over 21 fpe. More experimentation is needed with other pellets and with the scope mounted and zeroed.
Bottom line: I am very happy with the fit and finish, power, and performance of the Model 95....especially for under $150!!!!

Gene...I'd like to remove stock from my new Hatsan95. Having trouble with front screws. They dont seem to be the standard two screw(one on each side) as my other rifles. Tried screwdrivers on each side and would only turn like 1/8 turn, thats it! Dont know if its seized?
Help!.......Thanks. Jim N

You have to removes small screw. It is the lock screw for nut under it.

Very interesting post and good shooting too; thanks for sharing. The Hatsan springers are popular in South Africa and a spring gun tuner here (mze) specializes in gas-ramming them with units made to his own specification.

Hi Gene,
Following up with a couple more specific questions about tuning the Hatsan 95.
- While taking apart the gun, the plastic front sight needs something more than removing the Allen screw.
I'm afraid I'll ruin it if forced much more. Any ideas?
- The Crossman gas ram you suggest cost > $100 - just for the part. Do you think its benefits outweighs its
cost given the whole gun goes for $148? Another words, is the same tune less the Crossman gas ram clearly
inferior IYO? I not really looking to add power, but reducing weight or increasing accuracy is appreciated.
- I have a wood shop, not a metal shop. Doing the work myself is half the fun in addition to the actual shooting!
IYO can someone "pretty handy" accomplish the gas ram change without a lathe or mill?
As I said before, have worked on many guns 35 years ago and almost became a gunsmith.
- What does a competent, gas ram tune cost in today's market?
Lastly, when I sent my first reply, I had no idea your work was so highly respected!
Thanks for helping a "weekend tinkerer" ..................Kirk Schwarz - Bothell, WA

Hi, Gene...and all!
I, too am interested in the Hatsan 95 and, now that I am getting more into the forums, I would like to find someone who can perform a good tuning of a new gun. I agree with the others that Gene's prior work, including this gas ram conversion, is very highly desirable. Unfortunately, he says he has retired, so what are we to do now?
)
If anyone can recommend someone to do the same, professional level of fine tuning on the Hatsan 95 that Gene has been doing, I will certainly appreciate knowing the name(s) and how they can be contacted. Meanwhile, I am already learning a lot from some of you airgun experts, so thanks for all you do here on GTA.
Best Wishes,
Lynn

Thanks for the review and sharing all the ways you've improved the Mod 95. Can you do many of the same things to a Hatsan 125?

Sorry guys but I no longer do any tunes or mods except for my own air rifles. The gas ram I used on the Mod 95 was approx. $30.00 from Crosman. If I do anymore mods I will post them with pictures on the forum.

Hey Gene,
Doing a Tune on my Hatsan 95 and 135. Can you tell me which oversized JM seal you used when doing the Gas Ram of the Hatsan 95?
I believe the 95 has an OD of 27MM.
Any help would be appreciated !!

It has been a while since I did this tune and seal mod. You will just have to do as I did and take measurments with calipers and pick the seal size from JM's site. Remember that the seal you need has a square inside shoulder and not tappered like most other manufactured air rifles.
