NP trail Pistol

Was shooting the NP Pistol today over the chrony and noticed a drop in velocity . Prior to today, I was getting an occasional 600 -605 and averaged 590. Today I was getting 545 or so. I have about 350 - 400 shots through it. Any ideas on the loss of power ?

 Mine has problems too.  The barrel will not lock up tight and cracks open when fired.  That is just the latest issue.  I should have sent it back the first day. But I'm a tinkerer.   I have turned mine into a parts gun.

I got one from a buddy,that I believe was a refurb.(capital R upside down stamped in the barrel) He had no luck with it.
 Wasn't a good lock-up, so I replaced the spring behind the detent. That spring you could close between thumb and finger, I put a heavy one in.
 Tried the tissue test across the breech; it failed. Put a spacer behind the breech seal. No more leaks.
 The rear sight couldn't go high enough. (shooting way low) Tried dot sights, and didn't like. 

So, I cut the front sight lite tube off. Set the rear sight two clicks from bottomed out and filed the front sight down until I could hit what I was looking at. And now I could adjust the rear as needed.
 I'm happy with it.  And I do leave the cocking tube on.

Oh, the hours I've spent trying to solve this very problem...

Shims and new breech seals do no good.

I believe that the real culprit is that the barrel lockup detent is grossly under-engineered. It's way to small and the spring behind it is much too weak. The hole for the spring isn't large or long enough to substitute an adequate spring in place of the original.

It's easy to tell that the breech lockup is failing by measuring the velocities of pellets at the muzzle while applying a little upwards pressure to the barrel. Immediately, the gun shoots CPHPs at 535 fps. Shoot the gun without any support for the barrel, and velocities with the same pellet drop to 460 fps.

I've had some success in getting velocities where they should be by tightening the barrel pivot hinge as snugly as I could and adding various gasket-makers and sealants around the air vent and the breech seal, but these are really just kludges.

It's a really, really, unfortunate design flaw, because this could have been a terrific deal of an air pistol.

I have to agree on going back to the "drawing board". I had to deal with it not locking up straight which caused some barrel droop, it's not scope-able, a dot scope is the best that I could do. As for power mine hasn't slipped up but it's coming. It's okay if you shoot it between 10 and 15 yds, further out you will be lucky to hit the target at all. To me it's just another novelty, closet clunker in the collection.

IMHO, this is a real shame. With a superior breech lockup that prevents air from venting, a better trigger, and a slightly revised grip that doesn't have such an abrasive pattern, this gun would be a true winner. How I wish that I could be Product Manager at Crosman for a month...

I noticed that both types of Crossman pellets I have tried in this gun fit pretty loosely.  I may look for a pellet that is a little more snug in the barrel.

Have you tried gamo redfires? they've always been a tight fit in most barrels I've put them in.

No prob, if those don't work you might be able to use some 8+ grain jsb's. I've found that the skirt tends to be a little bit bigger on those, not as extreme as the redfires, but not nearly as loose as the crosmans.

Gamo Tomahawks are also a snug fit. Can't get them at my Walmart any more.

The nitro piston leaked down to the point that a pellet will not move from the beach.  This is the second I have owned (gluton for punishment).  The first never shot to specks.  If anyone wants my current one for parts and will pay the shipping they can have it.  PM me.
