XP airguns ranger 45 caliber 36inch barrel rifle
« on: May 02, 2011, 02:52:18 AM »
I just got my xp airguns ranger 45 caliber in this week , this gun  is a shooting  monster !

Dan Mcvey shot a 430 grain bullet out of my gun before he shipped it on high power 4500 psi 875fps 731fpe the 3rd shot fired out of the new gun , this should improve around 50fps after break in according to Dan .

I have a Richards microfit stock tiger wood laminate -thumb hole target style stock , that i had richards make the front extra wide , and make the cheak peice extra high so it would alien with the scope better , i used west systems epoxy with the 207 clear hardner to finish the stock , 4 coats then  sanded to 1500 grit , then buffed with 2 compounds to a high gloss finish.

Saturday i put  about 150 rounds through it , using 454 round ball -250 grain laser cast bullets , to start to break the gun in

the power is amazing on this gun on mid power using 454 round ball  3800 psi the gun shot 1150 fps then worked down 9 shots to 877 fps on 1 charge of air , i was very surprised that i could get that many shots at over the 900fps.

250 grain laser cast bullets shot mid power 4200 psi  987fps then worked it's way down to 720fps  after 9 shots.

this is during break in so these number should improve around 50 fps according to Dan Mcvey at xp-airguns .

today I shot about 200 rounds off , and tethered the gun to a 44cf tank that was at 3400 psi and shot it at low power till that cylinder was down to 1700 psi then switched to one of my 88cf tanks and shot a bunch more .

some pics of todays shooting

So very pleased to have you join us here at the GTA Dan, and thanks for bringing that beauty with you ;)  If i had the extra money, i'd be ordering one of those quick, that shot count and power is astounding. Do you hunt with your bigbore(s) or just an extreme airgunner? Were you quite pleased with your purchase from Richards? Jeff

Thanks JonnyReb , i have had the Korean guns -sam yang 909 Tom Basile moded 308 caliber barrel , career mk300 -22, Sumatra -22  , for some years now . i have been waiting and waiting for the right big bore that could shoot 4500 psi with massive power to come out ,none before the ranger messured up to what i wanted ,

Dan Mcvey -xp-airguns made it happen developing his ranger 45-58 caliber guns .

so i got on his list , and now have my dream gun ! HA ! HA ! very happy with this super gun !

the powder burners were AMAZED ! at the power that this gun had over this weekend , when they heard it shoot , they came over and asked   " what kind of gun is that ? "  then after i would show them what i was shooting ,and how it all worked , they were very impressed to say the least .

Richards micro fit makes a good product, but Dan now has a stock maker that will cut the ranger action in what ever style stock that you want , i had to cut the inlet myself and the action/trigger  area out with my die grinders and using a piece of round tubbing , and sand paper , very time consuming , i had to really ride Richards to get my stock done to be honest with you , but it did turn out the way i wanted it to , i had them leave the cheak piece 2 inches high so i could shape it the way i wanted it ,also i had them make the stock wider 3 1/2 inches wide, the length   of the inlet front area , i am going to make ,or buy, and ultra light stock for hiking with the gun i think .

Marvin,  i think it's time to do some casting , i know your Gargoyle gun has the same barrel i think ? and you have a ton of experiance casting lead bullets ,what hardness of lead mix should i use for casting round ball /bullets for the ranger ?

What I have experience  with both a RCBS and a LEE .454 RB mold is . With pure lead they dropped .452-.453 RB . With 12 bhn they dropped .456-.457 . Hope that helps . I noticed that Roto now has a 40 to 1 as well as 30 to 1 . RB are RB and very accurate is some rifles out to 50 yards or so . But you can not re size them and my experience again is between 50-60 yards what was super accurate became very inaccurate . But I have never been able to push them as fast as you . These two reasons are why I went with that 142-145 grain accurate mold that I call my mini maxi ball that you see pictured .Marvin

Marvin .. i decided to order everything tomorrow

melting pot 20lbs
flux
kroil for the mold
454 round ball mold

Marvin what all molds do you use that worked good for you on the 452 ? , and who sells them , and   how much $$$ do they cost , i was just going to use pure lead i think  , i can get it for a little over 1 buck a pound.

Pure lead is hard to get to fill the mold out . As you can see by the size difference in the RB. I like fast flat shooting rifles . It helps to keep the hold over down with BB. Even with hunting you do not know if your game will be 35 or 65 yards away .And a flat trojectory is nice to have . All the energy you need is to get to the internal organs .  I do not have a lot of heavy weight molds . Marvin
Accurate 454-145 grain

Obsolite ideal 452389 185 grains

Obsolite ideal 454616 225 grains but a new version is out now

Obsolite RCBS 82050 .452 255 grain new version is out now .

With 10 -22 bhn lead very one of these bullets will out shoot the shooter IMO with my Gargoyle . Marvin

Marvin ..thanks ...are all of those 454  size ?  i noticed the 452 laser cast stuff shot better at low power 2500 psi maybe the size is the problem 452 ? that smaller 145g accurate bullet looks like a good plinker round ,that would not waist a lot of lead or air .

I noted on each mold the size . Some are .452 and some .454 . But even the .452 molds drop .453-455 with different lead . I re size all my bullets to .452 which is the groove size of the barrel . Dans recommended size as well . I have heard it stated that with a long heavy bullet that is larger than .452 that the bullet starts to engrave the rifling and it becomes hard to close the bolt . In other words the bullet is being pushed beyond the throat to far .As of yet I have never ran a bullet over groove diameter . The bullet rides on the lands which are smaller than the bullet diameter to start with . All that lead has to go some were . Lead is only so plastic and elasticable . Then it gets sheard to the base which causes accuracy problem .IMO Marvin

Every one has their own preference . Mine is aluminum . You do know that you can alter any of the molds that he has any way you want or design your own bullet design . Marvin

Marvin , Charlie has set me some 408grain -  45-425b accurate mold number sized to 452 , that i am going to test out , they did well in his 28inch barreled ranger , if they do good in mine , i will  get that one for a heavy bullet to shoot on high  power .

Dan if you are still thinking about the mold that I have . I can send you a few to try before you buy the mold . I have had no problem so far in the two rifles I have shot them in . I don't really have time to cast and sell bullets right now . And then the issues that shooters and other casters that sell throw at you just don't make it worth it . This is a hobby to me not a ego trip if you know what I mean . E-mail me and let me know how many you would need as well as your address if you want . Marvin
