State Restrictions on Airguns
« on: April 28, 2011, 07:19:55 PM »
I friend of mine who camped out with me this summer got the airgun bug.  This week he finally ordered a new Stoeger Arms X20S Suppressor. (removed...nothing to do with the thread)
FYI, it's illegal to hunt anything with airguns in Pennsylvania.  I'm sure that nobody will mind if you're shooting rats, but technically, it's illegal.

I think he was just making the comparison to other odd laws, sure enough our country is full of them. Whats the deal with slingshots/airsoft? Seems like they are restricted in SO many places? Places you could have a .50 legally shipped to.. weird.

Your friend needs to find a new vendor.

IL law is clear on the subject.  However, it seems that airgun sellers just pluck disclaimers from other sellers, and copy/paste.

The restriction is located within the FOID card act.  700 fps AND .18 cal or larger, not OR.  Meaning .177 of any velocity is fine, as is .22 slower than 700.   Even then, with a valid FOID card, he can have anything.  Those restrictions listed pertaining to foregrips are remnants of those local codes some towns had regarding "assault weapons" from long ago and have nothing to do with airguns.  Most of those codes were reversed after McDonald vs. the City of Chicago awhile back, after the NRA filed suit in every town with laws like that.  Most towns erased the codes, rather than fight.

Good vendors understand that IL law doesn't apply to them if they aren't in IL, due to that pesky little U.S. Constitution thing.    ;)

Having said that, if he lives in Chicago, Aurora, or Cook county, then he needs to move.  They don't recognize the Constitution in those countries.  We've been trying to vote them out of the state, but haven't had much success so far.   :(

I believe these are restrictions on shipping just airguns, not that you canít have them.  Of course I could be wrong.

Massachusetts has none of the listed shipping restrictions for air rifles, but Cabelas wouldn't send it to my door. I had to get it shipped to CT where I work, and bring it home myself.

Sportsmansguide doesn't ship to CA, not because it's illegal here but because our state requires an Adult Signature which supposedly cost an extra $5 shipped. UPS usually just leaves the package at the door, but with FedEx you actually have to sign for it or else they'll hold onto the package until someone is home to sign it.

This friend of mine lives in Arlington Heights, IL.  Not sure if that's considered Chicago or not - don't think so.
But as far as the vendor goes, it was Pyramyd Air - not exactly newcomers to shipping airguns.  But it was a .22 and it does shoot over 700fps so I'm guessing they're either correct or playing it real safe.

I too was surprised at all the states/munies banning slingshots.  I always wanted a nice slingshot as a kid.  I made my own out of a forked stick and an old inner tube.  Thinking back on all the trouble I caused with that thing I guess I'm fortunate my parents wouldn't buy me one.  I bought both my boys fine slingshots when they were very young and they never used them - go figure.

GTA - What's been your success with air gun target practice?
