Hey guys thought you might get a kick out of wind gadgets...been looking at the store bought ones and they aint cheap.Well im car guy and love building with junk!
So I dug out a couple of old alternators, seems like a decent idea,I got my bearing hub,got my bearing supported shaft...so why not.
2" pvc caps some 1/4 x20 all thread and a mig welder and a cold one or two
and I came up with this getto contraption...I believe they will work well.
Now I have a clue what the wind speed may be,now I need to know direction,so I found a piece of aluminum a big sharpie fit in the end perfect for my pointed nose cone, cut a slit down it and slid in some chloroplast for the rear fin.A 5/8" dowl rod slid into the center section so the nuts on the all thread dont collapse the aluminum tube...mounted this to a dustcap and welded to the alternator pullet...walla
As usual now I have a a way to judge wind better...and no wind to be had lol

That is one way to do it.
Me-
I've bought the real 3-cup set up and used bicycle
speed-o to make a few, hardest part was the figuring
out the wheel dia. number to enter to then have
the speed-o show the right wind speed.
(ok maybe it was holding it out the window
while driving at set speed to find out if
the number was working)
But I have since gotten a hand held unit
of Amazon and have used it to help the
above stuff but, this has now ended up
in my chrono box of stuff with my db meter also.
the things we do

A simpler approach would be a "Mass Airflow Sensor" (MAF) in a tube mounted to your directional vane. They are calibrated to produce a specific voltage associated with a rate which air is flowing past them. The newer ones have a heating element in them, and based upon how much "cooling" they are getting (relative to the absolute temperature) the provide a voltage which is proportional to the airflow with no moving parts. A trip to a junkyard will allow you to snag one fairly cheaply.
