Just curious, anyone seen a list with different animals and how many FPE it takes to get the job done?
Also, can someone explain to me the physics of why a small bird drops dead instantly with a shot unless it is anything but a grazing blow but a larger animal takes much more energy. Is it the shock wave the pellet makes on a small body that destroys everything on the inside but on a larger animal it dissipates more and doesn't destroy much other than what it pushes through?

This the minimum energy you need on IMPACT with "head-shots" for a 1-shot, 1 QUICK kill.
1) Gray squirrel/Fox Squirrel - 4.5fpe
2) Eastern Cottontail/Swamp Rabbit - 4fpe
3) Jack Rabbit White, Black, and Jack O' lope - 4.5fpe
4) Raccoon/ Bandit - 9fpe.. if it's a big one, 10fpe.
5) Virginia Opossum/ County Rat - 10fpe
6) Ground Hog/ Wood Chuck - 7-8fpe (depending on size)
7) Gray Fox - 8.5fpe
8. Red Fox - 9.5-10fpe
9) Bobcat - 9fpe
10) Bullfrog - I have no clue, but 2fpe should do the job.
11) Snapping Turtle - no clue again but I would think at least the same as bird or squirrel.
12) Crow - 3.5 fpe head, 6fpe body/vitals
13) Pigeon - 3 fpe head, 5fpe body/vitals
14) Sparrow - 2.5fpe, it doesn't matter where you hit them.
15) Starling -
These may be +/- 0.5 to 1fpe max., but will give you a pretty good idea for the distance and power you will need. Now you got 6 weeks to get 1 of each and post pics!
I saved this a while ago, hope it helps:)

I am going to need a bigger gun. :)
Thank you!

Well i've been waiting for this to reappear, thanks for posting it. I'll assume these would be bare minimums for the furry critters with a perfect headshot. I'd have to wonder too, if a 22 or .25 cal with only 8-10ftlbs left would penetrate the skulls of some of the animals mentioned? What do ya'll think? A little light?
Also snaab, what you said about the birds dropping like a rock, it's so true. As a kid all i had was a 99champion, which i now know shot a bb at about 300fps. That equates to exactly 1ftlb of energy and i can't tell you how many hundreds of birds that gun took. Most dropped stone dead as mentioned. J

I know, it is crazy. It is like their insides are built of tissue paper. One good pop and they drop like a stone. A crow on the other hand, even at say 5-6 fpe, unless it is well placed - they may take off and live... at least for a while. :-\
My guess would be that on a small bird, it is like shooting a small container full of water - it basically explodes. The shock wave just destorys everything inside of them where with a larger animal, it is like shooting a larger container of water where it sloshes things around a bit but unless you hit something vital, it isn't going to provide a quick kill.
Though - I too am amazed with how little power it takes. As a kid my buddies Red Ryder that was around 300 fps could take out birds fairly easily.

Yeah theses are the bare minimums, I've dropped a lot of birds with my crosman 357 pistol, a 22 at 10 fpe is moving at like 550ish fps , about the same as my QB78 and it does a deal on big jackrabbits(>25 yrds with headshots)
