Title: Daisy 990
Post by: daveshoot on October 24, 2010, 11:16:34 PM
I was going to make you guess... what miracle gun is both self-contained multi-shot pumper, or CO2, with the flick of a switch? And also shoots BBs from a repeating reservoir, or single shot pellets? If this was Swedish, it would cost $1600.00! (Of course it might shoot a little better group.)

Well, it's my old friend, the discontinued Daisy 990. This model was the subject of a sad lawsuit in which a 10 year old boy was actually killed by a supposedly empty gun, and taken off the market.

Before I was back "into" airguns, I bought one of these in Walmart in the mid-90s for general rodent control. It was about $60 and I remember thinking "that's a lot for a bb gun".  ;D

I loaned it to a work colleague and just got it back- after several years. After a couple drops of Pellgun oil, it chronied 475 fps pretty consistently on 7 pumps with CPHPs. I don't shoot BBs out of it anymore and rarely did, and I am not a CO2  guy, so it's pretty much been a MSP for me. Not a bad little pumper, and sadly, now a collectible, due to the lawsuit.

So, this is my bargain rifle post of the month... note the fine wood grain and engraving! I will have to try it with some Hobbies or the Daisy Max's>

It's actually a nice-looking cheap gun, if you stand back a little . Similar lines to the M1 Carbine. I find it loads pellets better if you close the bolt slightly until you see the probe. It has a magnetic tip for loading steel BBs, btw.

Actually the 880 caused the death, but the 990 was involved in a couple of other serious "accidents".

The problem was the BB reservoir. You could dump or shoot the BBs out until there was no rattle, and think it was empty. However, a BB could still be lodged in there somewhere, shake loose, and get picked up by the magnetic tip of the bolt.

Of course this is only a problem if you pump the gun,  cock it, and point it at someone at point blank range and pull the trigger. But you can't sue someone for being stupid or careless, and they wouldn't have the deeper pockets of a corporation.

The Cearley law firm has made a nice little business of suing Daisy for their deadly Powerline rifles. You can read their details here: http://www.cearleylawfirm.com/news-articles/article.asp?id=39. (http://www.cearleylawfirm.com/news-articles/article.asp?id=39.) I'll bet they don't donate any of the proceeds to NRA or firearms safety training for the people who clearly need it!
