Title: Most accurate air rifle at over 50 meters...
Post by: Guam Airgun Shooter on September 12, 2011, 09:58:03 AM
I want you guys opinion on what is the best, most accurate, air rifle out there past 50 yards... but I have a few catagories...

1) price is no object single shot catagory:
2) price is no object repeater catagory:
3) Under $500 single shot:
4) Under $500 repeater:
5) price no object springer:

I ask this because I am really looking to buy a really good long range pcp air rifle. I just saw a video on Youtube where Mr. Edgun using a Matador killed a starling at 125yrds... that is no easy feat. I was wondering if there are any other guns, like say Daystate Air Wolfs, FX Revolutions, Airforce COndors, etc... that can do the same thing or shoot 1" or better 5 shot groups at a 100 yrds. Thanks for your input and happy air gunning to you all.

BTW, I am not biased to any particular airgun or manufacturer for that matter... I just want honest opinions and photo proof of your groups and results are appreciated.

Most of the PCP air rifles you mentioned (Daystate, FX, Airforce, Edgun, BSA, Air Arms, Marauder) are capable of 1 inch or less groups @ 100 yds, in the hands of a good shooter, with proper ammo and good conditions. Shooting 1 inch groups consistently @ 100 yds or more, IMO, is no easy task. The slightest wind (or misjudgement of it), pellet differences or shooter error can throw a pellet off considerably @ 100 yds.  Spring/gas guns, because of their recoilling nature, would be harder to shoot at those long of ranges, but it can be done. I think the biggest factor is the human behind the trigger all things being equal. Most high end PCP (and even some not so high end) have good quality barrels. Next I would say ammunition is the next biggest factor. I think with plenty of practice and patience, you'll see the group sizes shrink over time as you learn to shoot long range. As far as which rifles are best, I think is debateable and many times boils down to personal preferences.

Also worth noting is that for serious long range accuracy, I think .177 is out. (much as I hate to admit it, hehehe)

Ted (EdgunUSA) has a video or two in which he compares his Edgun to an FX Royale, and that should give you an idea of how they compare. As I recall, he said they're about the same, it's just about preference.

Ted does his homework, is a good shot, and has good equipment. He does everything he can to help accuracy. He shoots only the favorite pellet, he shoots from a bipod while seated most of the time, and he has the wind doping and pellet drop all figured out.

He gets lots of practice too, having farm access really helps there.

I bet there are lots of PCP guys who make shots like that. It just so happens that he gets them on camera in high quality and slo-mo.

Hints is spot on with his post.

I am down to three air rifles, a 25 Condor, a AA S410 carbine sl fac and a Ranger 45.

Any three can do it with projectiles ranging from 18.1 to 410 grains, tethering helps, culling projectiles also helps, but most importantly having a on day that is completley absent of wind.

We are opening new frontiers here as far as performance of PCP's are concerned, a exciting time to be passing air. ;)

It's like Nathan and the others said.  A lot depends on the shooter, the (absense of) wind, how good your bench rest is, your position, your breathing, etc.  The Daystates, FX, Air Force, Air Arms and most BSA guns are all capable of 1" groups at 100yds if you properly maintain the rifle and shoot its favorite pellet from a solid bench rest with a good technique.. or if the rifle was put together well at the factory.  Sometimes even with a $2,500-3K Daystate you have to tweak, adjust or tighten something because they did a crappy job when assembling the gun.

The Matador performs very well because it is a 30-32fpe gun.  It does not have a heavy hammer like a Condor for ex. that would throw that same pellet 200-300fps faster or induce some recoil and/or some other stress on components.  It has a Lothar Walther barrel just like the Air Force Talon/Condor and Air Arms, but with the right combination and balance of good quality parts working in harmony, it can be as accurate as the very high-end European PCP's.  The Condor can be equally impressive with some basic tuning by the owner (adjusting the tophat and the Power Wheel), sometimes reducing the power, and using heavier pellets (21+gr) the gun likes if needed.  Then ultimately it comes down to the shooter.

I'd be looking at the HW100, Edgun, FX and Daystate rifles for that type of accuracy.. but the rest is all on you. My self personally am saving up for a HW100.

regardless of brand of rifle i would say a .25 over .22 or even .177. the heavier pellets will do better with any kind of wind. typically a .25 would do better than a .177. especially if your slinging them at roughly the same speed. jmo. ;D

The HW100 does look interesting perhaps a little anemic for my tastes, but from what I read it is a tack driver.  On the yellow form a poster had a .312 group with a .177 at 55 yards.

we had a poster from over the pond with a nice range and club meets. they had lots of different high end pcp's. he claimed the hw100 was king at i think 100 meters. spoke highly of it.

HW100 is amazing out of the box, the shot count is not the highest but it is regulated! That's a plus in my book, and you can buy an FX tank adapter and tank for it as well.

AA S500 or 510. Very accurate and under $1000 depending on what you get. JSB exact or AA Fields 4.52
