Wondered what every ones opinion is on cutting springs. I have read were guys just cut down a spring and they seem to think it works OK. I never had much interest in doing it but the other day I had an air gun apart and it needed a spring. Well I had several Springs I had bought from Crosman and they only cost $4.00 and change ea. so no big deal if I ruined one.
I cut 1/2" off the end and ground it flat and polished bought ends. Surprised me that it seems to be working smooth as silk. Rifle acually has a little more power than before and it's just as accurate as before.
Anyone else have any experience doing this? And any long term problems.

I cut a stock gamo spring and fit it to my mod 62 chinese gun. I measured it and pinched the coils together with vice grips then heated it to make the end just like a new one then chopped off the excess, ground and poloshed the end and its worked for a while now. Bumped up my velocity too. Its really not hard.

As a matter of fact had just cut one down. Had made a derlin top hat and cut the spring to smooth out the gun. Don't have a chrony but shoots smoother.

Hi bobbyjim!
This is exactly the kind of info I am also looking for. Spring info. Can we measure or calculate how they fit, or how strong they are, before we install them?
Good topic, thanks.

I do it all the time! and you'll find you get a much smoother shot cycle all around, you may lose some power but have a nicer shooting rifle, but if you cut the spring you should really try to close the spring end back up like it was in it's factory configuration but I have left them open before without any problems in the past but closing it back up will make it stronger and less likely to break on the end JMO
