Wildcatter here again with a new rifle. At least to me it was... I'm talking about the Hatsan AT44 Long in Pump Action. This was a refurb from Wing Supply for $274 which seemed like a good price. When I got the rifle, I put three shots through it and it was loud and hit hard. My only issue with the gun out of the box is a very difficult automatic thumb safety which was hard enough, it took 2 fingers to push it in to fire the rifle.
Let's roll back the time a bit. When I bought the rifle, I was looking for a solid .177 PCP with good shot count and a proven platform to make a ratting gun out of it. One of the airgunners in my little circle is Baxter Walton, Mr. Hatsan. Knowing his skills with a Hatsan and having seen him shoot his AT44, I thought this a good rifle to purchases. Especially at a price lower then $300! What I DIDN'T know was that the PA in AT44PAL meant "pump action". When I did figure this out, rifle had already shipped and I thought maybe I could make it work.
So now I have the rifle and it fires, but it's loud and I don't like the safety. What to do, what to do...ah hah! I know! Baxter, good buddy, here's my rilfe and here are the things I don't like. This guy is gooooood. The rifle is firing at around 1030 fps. A little too fast. Baxter does his thing, including working on the safety so it pushes in with a finger. The pump action cycles with no issues and it now sports a Baxter LDC which has quieted this beast down. Right now it's shooting 13.43 JSB .177's at 800 fps putting down just shy of 20 fpe. Way more then enough for rats as the dead rats in my backyard can attest to.
The silencer and the safety work have turned this gun into a beast. I have it zero'd at 15 yards for rats and it's spot on. Very little adjustment on the scope out to 30 yards, but what is a little strange to me is that after having zero'd the rifle at 15 yards, the gun shoots a half mil dot high at 20 and 30 yards. I got a rat at 28 yards right behind the eye by holding under a half mil. If I hadn't ranged the rifle during the day, that would have been a missed shot over the rat's head. Since it's my backyard and the rats are coming from the neighbors and from a sewer line (we think), you don't get a second shot. Hit it or it is GONE. The pump action is smooth enough, the gun doesn't have to be lifted off the sticks or off the table to cycle which will make follow up shots a little easier to me then a side lever requiring a hand to be taken off the rifle. I support the rifle with a hand while shooting of the table and cycling the pump action is simple when shooting this way as the natural way of holding a rifle puts your hand on the pump action already.
I have only had a chance to target in the back yard and do a little night pesting, but I have enjoyed it immensely. I'm getting around 50 shots roughly before it falls off the regulator Baxter Walton installed and they are consistent. The LDC makes this backyard friendly...well, backyard friendly for ME, not for the birds and the rats and one lizard. The lizard was a 20 yard shot free hand and blooded the rifle.
My only negatives on this rifle are the weight and length. It is fairly long and with the LDC, even longer; I have to buy a long gun rifle case. It's not a gun to tote around, either. It has some heft to it and could wear you down on a long active pesting night. I hope to find out in the near future!
