Title: New to forum, bought a Crosman Fury, have a few comments and questions
Post by: Flex on November 25, 2012, 10:34:37 PM
Joined the forum just today and I'm hoping for good info exchange. As I mentioned in "self-intro" monologue, I recently (Black Friday) bought a Crosman Fury at my local WalMart. I have a few comments and a few questions for the forum membership. First off, first impressions are important to me. RE: this Crosman Fury, my 1st impression is very favorable! The fit and finish is above and beyond what I would expect on a sub $100 air rifle. When I read "All-weather stock" the first thing that came to mind was cheesy plastic BUT NO the Fury's stock is quite solid feeling and has considerable heft to it. The overall weight is just over 6 lbs. A CenterPoint 4 x 32 scope is included as are aluminum scope rings. Most of the reviews I've read speak to the "low endedness" of this scope but I'm going to give it a fair shake before I jettison it for an upgrade. The aluminum rings are a nice touch (I've read that other entry level air rifles come with plastic rings) and the rear ring has a set screw to help minimize scope movement with the considerable recoil that springer type air rifles are known to have. RE: the spring piston, I've read other posts questioning whether or not this model has the "nitro piston". The WalMart package i.e. the one with the CenterPoint scope, has a spring powered piston. I think that the way to tell for sure is to check the model number on the left side of the breech end of the barrel assembly. The nitrogen gas piston models end with an "NP". My spring powerred model ends with an "X".
Now for some questions. I guess my main question is; Do I have to do anything special before the first time I fire it? Additionally, is there any rust preventative that needs to be swabbed out of the barrel before shooting? Are there any lubrication points. Do I need to apply "LocTite" to any of the screws? Do I need to be concerned with temperature changes? It's been looking a lot more like Winter here in WI since T-Day. I don't have a suitable indoor pellet trap at this point in time but may have to build one. Thanks in advance to those that chime in. I'll be looking forward to being an active member of this forum. Later, Flex

I'm not entirely sure if you are saying you do have the springer version or not. However (as I've stated before I'm definately NO expert), if the gun is a spring piston rather than an NP, temperature need not concern! Also major things I have seen suggested during break-in, is to clean the barrel with some goo-gone and gun patches, then maybe lightly oil up the hinges and barrel. Other than that have fun! PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF IM WRONG ANYBODY AGAIN STILL LEARNING MYSELF!!

I'm quite certain that the Fury that I purchased from WalMart is, in fact, a spring powered piston type of break barrel air rifle. I base this mainly on what is stated in the specification section of the manual that came in the box with the rifle. I'm basing what I stated about the NP suffix to the model number meaning that the piston is nitrogen gas powered on information from the Crosman website. I, like you, am NOT an expert (but that fact has NEVER stopped me from pretending otherwise). The significance of the X suffix escapes me at this time. The Crosman website doesn't even show the existence of the Fury in the configuration that WalMart sells. I'm guessing that it's a special package put together just for WalMart.
Thanks for the tips & hints RE: using GooGone on the bore and lightly lubing the hinges.

Yeah, you have a spring piston air rifle.  Cleaning the barrel and tightening the stock screws, are the basic firsts.  Blue loctite on cleaned scopemounts and the stock's screws, will keep them good and tight. Break in the gun with a tin of cheap pellets.  A cheap gunpatch puller can be made from a length of weedeater line.  Cut a point on 1 end...and burn the other into a small ball.  Thread on a patch, feed the line from the breech, and pull out thru the muzzle.
Then the fun of finding the "best" pellet for it, begins.
I make pellet stops from newspaper.  I get a heavy box (wine bottle shipping boxes), and stuff them (interleaved), with papers.  Add a piece of 1/4"+ plywood in the middle and it makes a 2 sided backstop that lasts thousands, if you move your bull around. Works for my 10yd indoors with Magnum rifles.
Enjoy and Welcome!   Mike

When I get a new gun I like to shoot about 50 pellets before I mount my scope in case there a lot of oil in it. I also reclean the barrel after about a 100 shots to get rid of the crude that you are shooting out. For the center point 4x23 scope I thank there a great scope for a freebe the newer ones are clearer an hold up pretty well . try lots of different pellets helps with accuaccy an gun should start to shoot good after a half of tin of pellets but sometimes takes longer. enjoy your new gun. sometime those so call entry level can be tack drivers. you shoot in the cold but your poi might change alittle till gun gets warmed up. enjoy

I was going to buy the same air rifle but academy had the gamo hornets for 69.00.  i looked the fury over pretty good as i also work at walmart. it is a spring piston rifle and i hope they sent a scope stop with it as well. ive owned a  crossman quest before and it looks about the same except the fury has a synthetic stock.  I took all these mens advice cleaned my barrel made sure everything was snug and tightened down, its rated at 1200 pba and 1000 for lead i bought the crossman hollow point pellets to start and they work great out of both my nrifles

I think it's the other way around isn't it? The lube on the spring thickens up in the cold where as the nitrogen isn't effected? Not 100% on it, but I know PA always puts that lil comic on the NPs talking about that.
https://www.pyramydair.com/product/crosman-vantage-air-rifle-with-nitro-piston?m=2806 (https://www.pyramydair.com/product/crosman-vantage-air-rifle-with-nitro-piston?m=2806) (look at the rifle's photo gallery, last one)

Either way, would still be able to shoot, just maybe not as well!  :-\

But thanks for clarifying the NP vs spring for the Fury. I always wondered about it since wally world says spring, and crosman's site says NP. Good to know there's something to distinguish them outta the box.

Edit: (forgot) Welcome to the site! Lots of information and great people here! But be warned, we're all a bunch of enablers. Only Self-Help we'll administer is helping you to help yourself to another for the collection!

Y'all ever notice how liftgate, rearhatch, or tailgate  gas pistons start failing in the cold wx?   Those are the same gas pistons that are in NP units.  Plastic seal contraction, cheap construction...Leakage quickly.  My choice of a China NP  vs.  Spring in the cold.   I'll have the Spring, Thank you.  Proper lube would be the key.  Our Cold Wx, doesn't alter the molecular structure of a piece of spring steel.  Give it a few practice pumps to loosen it up, and go Hunting.  Good Marketing angle is what that's about.  Same with extended cocking of a springer.  You can do it all day, no probs.  I like the NP concept.  I don't like the offerings.

Since the Walmart Fury doesn't come with open sights, I went ahead and mounted up the CP scope. I went thru the zeroing drill but, like you say, it may take a hundred or so pellets down the barrel before things settle down and allow for improved precision. I was using a gun vise for stability but the poi was still quite variable. I was outdoors too (temp around 30 F) which may or may not have had some effect. I'm hoping to build a target holder/pellet trap that will allow for indoor shooting. I hoping too, that the CP 4x32 works out better than some of the reviewers report. So far I'm pleased with my new Fury. If the weather is decent on Thursday, I'm going to try to put a half tin of pellets down the bore and see if things smooth out.  That's it for now. Flex

my friend came over with a nib black friday walmart fury.i have to agree on the fury quality,@$64 ...cant be beat.
trigger was aweful,felt like 10lb pull,scope was bottom of the barrel,maybe 2-3 zoom...not 4.
but the first 100 shots produced many nickel groups @15 yards with cphps.im impressed.

Since this is my first foray into the world of break-barrel springers, I have nothing (in it's class) with which to compare. The trigger pull does seem a bit heavy (but there is some adjustability). I wasn't going to say anything negative about the scope (wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt) but it didn't quite seem to be 4x to me either. That's an easy fix tho and besides that, I can't imagine reaching out more than 50 yds on any kind of regular basis. I'm hoping to get a hundred or so pellets down the bore before this coming weekend to see if she settles into being a precision shooter. For $64 I'm willing to accept some shortcomings. Flex

KY Mke i live in texas it hardly ever gets cold here how do you think a nitro pistopn will do down here? kind of curious. FLEX... I  think you will be ok bro especiall first pellet gun so far close to 500 pellets through my gamo hornet scope hasnt shifted poi its light and fun to shoot and for the price you gave for it if you get a year or so out of it youve done good

No, it's not cold enough in TX (generally) to make a difference either way NP or Spring.   I have a quality issue with Cheap NPs, and the cost to replace them.  An industrial piston is another story.  I'd install one in a flash.  I find that a good shooting tuned springer is something different than outta the box China guns.  I will say that Flyingdragons ships out some nice hand tuned China guns.  He puts NPs in some too. If I was going back to that route, he'd be my only choice.  HTH.

I'm sure New England cold may affect a NP you think?

For the money, that should be a good platform. The "freebie" scope gets a lot of bad press, but I still have the same one on my Wally World Storm after 1 year, and haven't changed it simply because it's clear, it's effective, and gets my shots accurately placed out to 50 yards easily. I think they get looked down on mostly because a lot of us have other much nicer scopes and judge it against them a bit unfairly.

That particular rifle will probably benefit from a CDT trigger and Genes' barrel bushings, both fairly easy additions. Long as it shoots consistently and accurately I wouldn't worry about tuning it. Do some shooting and testing with it first before making any changes. If it shoots well, THEN consider a trigger and bushings. If not, take it back and get another.

"I was using a gun vise for stability but the poi was still quite variable."

@Flex,
Springers and NP's need to 'float' because of all the double recoil.  Get rid of the gun vise for using on a springer.  Learn the artillery hold, or let the gun do it's own thing on an open rest.  I use an open-cell foam lumbar support from the automotive department.

P.S.  My Storm XT broke in even better after a thousand or 2 rounds, so get 500 of cheap CPHP's through her.  Don't worry about cleaning the barrel right now until you get 100 shots through it -- Gotta shoot out all the garbage that's in the spring housing.  I don't pull the weed wacker line -- I get thicker gauge weed wacker line and push the patches through.  And, no need to fully cock the gun for cleaning -- dangerous and unneeded.  Just break it open.  And, after all that work of cleaning the barrel, you might as well start washing pellets.  At least I do anyways.  Those CPHP's have all sorts of gunk and fragments in them.  Even the boxed domed pellets do to.  Then you shouldn't have to clean the barrel for 2000 or 3000 shots or until your groups start going astray from normal.  Do a Q-tip test on the muzzle and check for burrs -- If the dry Q-tip snags then you have burrs.  Burrs can make your POI go astray.  Look into buying a CDT GRT trigger for it for $30.  Remove the stock, and make sure the pivot screw is tight on the barrel.  Then, blue thread-lock the stock screws.  I sometimes have to clean out the hole behind the breech (where the air comes out) with a Q-tip and alcohol -- Lead gunk and whatnot can build up around there.  Wipe down the scope rails & scope mounts with denatured alcohol before installing the scope.

Another one that bought the fury. I have a pump Daisy that I've been wanting to replace for a while. I went into Walmart thinking I was going to get the same Daisy rifle that comes with a scope. Unfortunately I was out of town at the time and the Walmart I went into had a fully stocked air rifle section so I had about 8-10 rifles to choose from. Settled on the Fury because of price and features. I'd bought it to go squirrel hunting that weekend. Good thing we ended up not going because of the break in required. I've put probably 50 pellets through it so far and I'm pretty impressed at 25 yards. Learning how not to shoot springers was a big help on accuracy.

Fill that Fury's stock with Gorilla Glue after the WM warranty expires :).

... Or silicone.

I just ordered the crosman fury from Walmart for $68 for my daughter. Anyone know which charliedatuna trigger works on this rifle? I just installed the grt 4 on gamo bone collector and big cat and it made a world of difference.

My new Crosman Fury CF1K77X is not same as my new Phantom CS1K77A. Except both are 0.177 cal 1000 fps "springers". The Fury is made in China whereas Phantom is made in USA (with "foreign components"). The Fury has a nicer blued finish. The Fury stock is longer than Phantom with much smaller cutout for mechanically different cocking lever. The Fury is bigger and seems twice as heavy as Phantom but weighs only about 1 pound more (without scope). The Fury penetrates a hardwood block 7.5 mm whereas Phantom penetrates same block only 5 mm (both back of skirt). (By comparison my new 0.177 cal 600 fps Crosman Pumpmaster Classic 1377C (with 8 pumps) penetrates same block zero, leaving a barely noticeable dent.) The Fury has no iron sights and has muzzle brake which seems to do nothing to reduce recoil that I can tell. The Fury box shows maximum game size "Varmint Raccoon" icon wheres Phantom box shows "Small Game Rabbit" icon. With 50% more penetration by Fury, that is believable. Thus, despite similar appearances, these 2 guns are different. (Have photos of all this.) Hope this adds to clarification (or confusion). Thanks for neat cleaning tips here guys.
