Title: The Crosman 3100
Post by: lizzie on November 03, 2011, 10:46:46 PM
I saw one for sale while cruising the internet today. It's made in Spain- I have no idea when they were manufactured. Was (is) the 3100 a decent gun? (by decent, I mean smooth, relatively quiet, and accurate)

They were made by Cometa in Spain Lizzie, a low priced shooter but, supposed to be decent quality when new. Cometa was/is better quality than same vintage Gamo and the Chi guns. Still, I remember vaguely a Crosman recall on these? Maybe Gene or Bob can remember? PM them or google the recall thing, you should know before you buy.

3100s are 20 yrs old-ish I think?

Thanks Brian :) - I'll check into that. 20 years oldish sounds good, but I don't know much about the Spanish-made guns.

I friend of mine gave me one. Very nice shooter very accurate but has a heavy trigger pull. There,s a fix for that but haven,t done it yet. Mine is from 1978 made by cometa crosman contracted them out for the gun. same as the cometa 100. Mine has a leather seal so a couple drops of oil on the seals helps once inwhile. The cocking effort is super light you think the spring is broken. an also has a great shooting cycle. I was getting 530 fps with the old sytle gamo match pellets. an will shoot dime size groups at 20 yd,s with the heavy a trigger tune would make this gun a tack driver. I highly reccommen the gun for nice low power gun. Gun is little heavy for the power it puts out. I think gene has a trigger tune in the library.  I put a value of about a 100.00 on the gun cause it,s so accurate.

1978? Wow, I'm losing whole decades here!

That's older than I guessed by 10 yrs!

Here's some info on that 3100 Recall I noted, website is  http://firearmsid.com/Recalls/FA_Recalls%202.htm (http://firearmsid.com/Recalls/FA_Recalls%202.htm)

CROSMAN
MODEL 3100,
AIR RIFLE

RECALL: This make and model Air Rifle may have the potential for UNINTENTIONAL DISCHARGE.

The Crosman, model 3100, Air Rifle is being recalled. The notice states: “When cocked, rifle could fire unexpectedly without the trigger being pulled, even with the safety engaged.”

Thanks Brian- I wonder if that's something that was repairable or not.

Btw, I looked on the Crosman manufacturing dates page, and they currently have the production years listed as only 1987-1990. I wonder what the deal is? Seems odd to me.

Sorry mine is 79 not 78 I,ve had no problems with the trigger at all. I remember reading about the recall when I got the gun about 5 years ago. This thread got me thinking about the gun so just got done shooting it. At 25 yd,s a got a six shot group of less then 1 inch four of them were touching an thats with daisy h-p. The is a pleasure to shoot even with the heavy trigger.

Lizzie, Crosman's dates are probably the second generation of the gun? Not neccesarily any changes other than the recall fix, maybe?

The recall sounds like a sear contact to mainspring release issue, either poor geometry or wobbly fit or...? They noted "with safety on or off" so, I'm guessing the above is the issue and the force/impact of closing the barrel after cocking is enough to jar it loose, bang!.

I got mine in around 87 when I was 12 and it was a great gun, with a horrible trigger!  You never knew when it was going to grab in the stroke.  I remeber it being accurate and quiet but not as good as my 2100 (at least at longer ranges)... and for shooting squirrels and such, not as effective... but my first air rifle and I have many fond memories of it.

I think I may have to dust it off and shoot it again... poor thing was abused between me dry firinig it, loading 1-10 bbs down the barrel and shooting it, leaving it cocked for weeks at a time... I will have to chrono it if I get a chrono for christmas.  :)

Let me know how it shoots. And be careful. ;)

Btw- your avatar looks like something from a Monty Python movie. Is it? Perhaps "The Holy Grail" or "The Meaning of Life"?
