How to remove the muzzle brake on an XS-25?

I've been spending a lot of time this fall shooting my rifle, and I've decided the large metal muzzle brake it came with just makes it too muzzle-heavy for anything other than off-the-bench shooting. While it shoots better than my Benjamin Trail NP off the bench, in the woods my Benji seems to be much easier to hunt with due to the better balance from the lighter, shrouded barrel.
I removed the allen screws that hold the brake on, and that allows it to wiggle a bit, but it doesn't slide off. Before I do anything that might cause damage, I wanted to see if anyone here knew a trick to removing it?
Also, does anyone know if there are lighter brakes out there? Would a cheap plastic one from another BAM clone (Ruger, Umarex, etc) fit the barrel diameter? I'm not too concerned about actually quieting the gun down, but rather having a better surface to hold while cocking.
Thanks!

they are very hard to remove, I have had luck using an aluminum rod and tapping the barrel out of the brake, need to recrown after you do that however....

Thanks for the info, Mike! Sounds like I'll be leaving it as it is, and trying to figure out another option then.

The barrel has a groove cut around the barrel under the brake. The set screws cause a burr on the groove edge. I tapped mine off with a piece of hard wood and a hammer. Once off and the burs removed it goes on and off easy.

Have you thought about maybe adding some weight to the butt stock. Overall it will make the rifle heavier but it could help the balance of the rifle.
