Title: Shooting Benches --- Show me yours
Post by: snakebite4767 on September 28, 2013, 12:23:38 PM
I't time to have a dedicated shooting bench and stop using tables or what not to shoot off of. I've been down at shop Cutting and Welding on what ever I could find in the scrap pile to build a shooting bench. I'm just not happy with what I'm coming up with. So far it looks like a Yugoslavian Turnip separator. Need some more/better ideas.
I see that Cabela's has one on sale for $99 that actually doesn't look too bad.... don't know how strong or stable it is.

How about at peek at what you are using in the way of a Shooting Bench?

Snakebite

OK.. here is my scrap pile bench:

LOL Dave!   That's a ton for sure!
I was just gonna mention, that if you have a "Workmate" portable work bench, you can make a top, with a bottom rib on it, to clamp onto it, and makes a stable platform, that don't take much space.
But you've got a lot on your plate with what Dave loaded u up with! ;)

I bought that Cabelas bench last time it was on sale (Timber Ridge). It's very sturdy and I love it.
Opens quickly and folds up very thin for storage. I comes with a pretty nice carrying bag too. They are not always in the box, but it's listed on the the website. Ours didn't have it inside so we asked and they ordered it for us.

TNX Retatcdude.. Nice looking bench. I wanted to see what folks were actually using... I had done a search, and did indeed see many various plans and commercial benches... but there is nothing better than finding out just what the Air Rifle Crowd is actually using. I was hoping to see if anyone was using a sort of Hammock arrangement at the front of the bench to lay the forend of the gun into. I suppose it would be akin to using a pair of Sticks. Any how... thanks for the photo... I'll post my scrap pile bench as soon as the paint dries. I guess it will work until I decide upon something else.

I like to use one of those plastic sawhorses that they sell at Lowes or Home Depot. Mine have a tray underneath for pellets and all the other junk that we need, and they fold up flat and take up hardly any space at all. Just fold up towel and lay it across the top and get to flinging lead!

Mr. Snakebite:
About the bench from Cabelas you mentioned in the first post. I forgot to mention that the forearm on the front of that bench is "Y" shaped at the top with a spongy roller on each arm. It actually works well with springers! Kind of like a paint roller rest.
It's easy to take out to if you want to use bags or whatever.

Tnx Tater... I looked at the video that RETATCDUDE posted. Those Rugged Buddy Saw Horse legs look pretty neat.  The Bench rest that I just made is not portable at all. It all welded together from the scrap pile.. and will stay here at home. However.. I just might have to either get those legs, or that rest from Cabela's. A portable rest might come in handy next month in Colorado, I think there will be a lot of time spent with the spotting scope and a portable rest would be nicer than the hood of the truck.

COOL! That ought to handle just about anything that you decide to use it for. I'm thinking it could easily handle two KEGs for the "After Shoot" party!  ;)

Mr. EZ.... Thanks for the links. It might be nice to find one that uses a swivel mount... like a Ack-Ack gun so I can cover the entire back yard from one location! Seriously, the way things are laid out around here my various target ranges are all in different directions, so as to avoid "Things", like trucks, tractors, trailers, Green Houses, Shops. I have to move the bench if I change ranges.   :(

Interesting idea. Take the plans for the heavy bench, modify it to a horse shoe or "U" shaped bench. Add a boat swivel seat and there you have it.

We were in Wyoming last month shooting prairie rats with those benches we made. 750 prairie dogs (me) in two days and 3 coyotes. They do very well in the field. AMAZON has the legs. Order 34" length...

It never occurred to me to wonder about a Yugoslavian turnip separator until I saw a photo of one.  And they double as a shooting bench.  How handy.  Does the Yugoslavian army use them for sniper practice, too>

Seriously, for a shooting bench I just use a workmate.  I have a paint roller supported by pvc pipe (three straight sections and a couple of nineties) which I clamp between the jaws.  I can move it to whatever height I want and tighten the clamps.  To complete the ensemble I have a cheap plastic lawn chair.  It's not elegant but it works for me.

Here is my bench i made from a set of $18  saw horses from  lowes ,piece of plywood & adjustable office chair from chinamart.I have had it over 2 years and it is still holding together and it has had some rough treatment.I have a handle on it and it is easy to carry and it is pretty light.

Most of my shooting is from right here.  A slab of rock atop a section of cottonwood trunk.  Works for me!

I know it's an old thread, but thought I'd post mine I just finished with some scrap wood.  I made adjustable front legs b/c I wasn't sure I could find a level spot in our woods.

EDIT: Added a pic of my shooting lane.  Had to yank quite a few honeysuckle out of the way for a clear path.

Jaw horse 119.00$. Make any shape top you want or multiple tops. 3 leg design makes for sturdy table on uneven terrain and you can clamp table at whatever "level" is. Has many other uses too.

Hey Guys,
Got my bench plans from another GTA member:  All parts, wood, pipe, flanges, caps and screws totaled about $95.  The bench is very solid, and with the 3 legged design, you never have to worry about rocking :D.

I personally built 1 like Franks (BarnyDaddy), and I built a 6' wide double table like RWS_53's bench.  If you look at Kirk's (SpiralGroove), his tops are thick like mine.  I use 2x12's, glued and Kreg screwed ... then routed all the edges.  I used rugged buddy legs on the portable bench.  Just sand, stain, and urethane ... your good to go.

Hey TerryM,
I can't believe I missed them ;),  normally I would have spotted them before the bench.
I was going to say Hemmingray No. 16, and A.T.&T's, but maybe California's.  Nice color :D
Unfortunately, the insulator radar isn't as Sharp as it was 40 years ago.

Pappy, sounds sweet, but we need a Pic ;D
I really like that build, and it would have been less than $50.

Kirk, that is one of the best I've seen.  Great design, and the butcher block top looks incredible.
Here's mine, just finished covering the top with vapor barrier (an adhesive-backed building material similar to Tyvek) and sprayed all the exposed metal with Cold-Galv for a totally weatherproof set-up (vapor barrier and cold-galv applied weeks after I took the picture):

Caldwell Stable Table. $180 shipped through Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Caldwell-252552-Stable-Table/dp/B00162PRPY?SubscriptionId=AKIAIQWHH4HRPK7LRQTQ&tag=c99-bd-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B00162PRPY&ascsubtag=Shooting000Bench (http://www.amazon.com/Caldwell-252552-Stable-Table/dp/B00162PRPY?SubscriptionId=AKIAIQWHH4HRPK7LRQTQ&tag=c99-bd-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B00162PRPY&ascsubtag=Shooting000Bench)

The table has opening for plastic holders supplied for rifle cleaning.  A 5/8 oak dowel and 1" nap paint roller fits great into these holders.  Table and paint roller setup works great.
