Tuning the Galatian

Hey Guys,
Having fun shooting the Galatian, but man, my ears are ringing
and the 255cc cylinder is getting kinda tiring to pump. Gotta make this gun quieter and more efficient->Now!
- Will investigate the rear hammer/pre-load adjustment.
- Will investigate plugging valve holes except (1 or maybe 2). Need to be able to remove brass bushing in receiver containing transfer port for alignment with remaining valve holes. The brass bushing resides in the metal receiver, much different than AT44 or BT65. Shouldn't be that much different, but I don't know yet.
- Also, looking to lighten the trigger a tad below OEM limits. Nice trigger, but still just a little heavy.
Almost hate to open up and tune the Galatian so soon, but (
guessing
) the basic Bob (rsterne) tune will give me another 20/25 shots and reduce the noise by 1/3.
The wasted air is playing a never ending song in my head
. Then again, it could be the sound barrier too

Not really tuned mine in .25. Have hushed her up. Very easy to shroud with 1" aluminum tubing. Sanded out fore arm with the tubing wrapped in sandpaper til it fit. Completely did away with barrel band. Didn't like the butt stock either so I put a Magpul butt stock on. I think yours is the wood version? Anyway the Magpul was for a Remington 870 real close fit with minor sanding to make it fit. Would post pic but my home computer has lost it mind & no pic. Resizer on phone. Have not tuned for power or shot count. I'm getting 26 shots@ around 875 with the Benji domes.

Hey Guys,
I know this sounds a little crazy, but I'm going to fill the (5) holes on the valve to my Galatian with 3/16" set-screws while the valve connected to the cylinder. Baxter, you mentioned, you had done this -> it's the quick and dirty way. I will make sure the brass chips/powder do not stay within the valve stem area.
Going to home depot to buy a cheap 10-24 tap, where I can grind the tip mostly flat and make a bottoming tap. Don't want to hit that stem and bend it. Will slap some J-B Weld over the set-screws once its been tested to work. In the past I've had a great deal of frustration with screwing in the set-screws too far which has interfered with the travel of the stem through the valve.
Because I've already completed plugging three valves, I'm doing it quick this time and hopefully will be shooting later tonight, the JB Weld could be dry tomorrow at this time

Update
:
Plugged (5) of 6 valve holes and shot a few rounds, ....only about 10% quieter? Will finish off the valve plug job tonight with J-B Weld and maybe that will help the sound/efficiency a little more. The remaining hole lined up pretty well (estimation) and will look into possiblly tweaking this alingment down the road.
Added an Air Stripper and now the gun is about as loud as the factory AT44. Will obviously need to make an LDC and will further investigate how to adjust preload.

Update 2
:
Valve plugging done, the gun is tolerable now shooting indoors w/o earmuffs - whew..... also seems to be more efficient. Will shoot a string of CPUM and see how many shots can be had below 4% ES. May regulate........we'll see.
Downloaded a schematic of the Canadian Air Gun site, but it's not very clear/defined. I have a feeling the Galatian doesn't have a way to adjust the hammer preload w/o completely dissembling the receiver each time?

Hey Guys,
Mostly took apart the Galatian last night and removed the hammer spring (very similar to AT44). The hammer/cocking lever are not easily disassembled for spring removal/lubing). Wanted to remove whole assembly to polish and smooth, but having second thoughts, trying not to nick the anodized/painted receiver --> Something I can't repair
. The gun as a whole is very easy to disassemble with everything fitting cleanly. Watch out for the (2) screws holding the butt stock retaining plate, they strip out in no time.
Will polish trigger sears and attempt to lighten -> This is a whole different Quattro animal!
Because the gun is .177 caliber, all OEM porting violates
rsterne's
(75%/80% bore) porting guidelines -> 4mm barrel port, 5mm (?) receiver hole (no port, just a hole between valve/barrel) and a 5/32 valve port.
No wonder the gun is still wasting air and pretty loud (after plugging 5 of 6 valve holes) - plus the heavy hammer.
Today, I'll find a weaker hammer spring to install/test before I narrow the (last) valve port to 9/64". Hopefully, these tweaks will be enough to increase the gun's efficiency enough where I can move onto deciding whether or not I want to install a regulator.
This gun's
basic plumbing
was designed to be used in .25/.22 caliber and NOT .177
.
Will include pics later - sorry..............

All good info, just what I thought, Hatsan made one platform and fitted all three on there, the most cost-effective way I guess.

Update:
Have gun just way I wanted it, but wondering if I should re-finish (round) cocking arm & blue?
Nope, think I will stop/reassemble without pushing my luck and a gouge to my painted receiver.
-
Preload can be adjusted on this gun
, since hammer contains a set-screw just like AT44, however, buttstock must be removed first, along with circular mounting plate that secures it (2 -> 4mm screws). Once done, adjustment hole is visible which 4mm allen wrench fits it (like AT44). I could not get to this last night as I stripped one of the two 4mm screws ->

Update 3
:
I had to refinish the cocking arm
Will attempt to re-blue with Birchwood Casey cold blue -> on hand. If not satisfied, I will buy the Brownnell's stuff.
The only blued parts on the entire gun are the barrel, air cylinder cocking arm and all screws.
After bluing the cocking arm, I decided to leave it bare metal as it makes the gun more subtle
.
It has enough bling already
.

Last Update:
Finally got the Galatian shooting well and with significantly less noise
After taking the entire receiver apart
, the only thing that needs to be done is to
Turn the (4mm) hammer, adjustment screw in
(clockwise -> reducing spring pressure) a bit. Just crony as you turn the set-screw in and watch the velocity/noise level drop. Hatsan has left the screw about 1/2 way out from the factory, giving it much more pre-load that was necessary for my .177 caliber version. That's why it was so loud even after plugging (5) of (6) valve holes.
I was able to reduce the velocity on my CPUM (10.5 gr.) to 925 fps and noise level so that it's just a bit louder than my tuned BAM B50
.
I don't even think a LDC is necessary at this point.
Final Tune
:
1) Plug (5) of (6) valve holes
2) Remove butt stock and butt stock retaining nut(disc), then tighten hammer preload (clockwise) until desired velocity and noise level are achieved.
I think these two steps are all that's needed in all calibers!!
