Title: Crosman Nitro Venom barrel replacement
Post by: map8660 on January 07, 2013, 11:05:07 PM
Greetings all,

I picked up a Crosman Nitro Venom in .22 cal, I was wondering if I could get  / build up from parts a shrouded barrel assy for it?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Easiest thing to do is call Crosman or get a parts list no. and call them.

I called Crosman this day, The fellow that answered the phone said that they were not taking orders till after 2:00.
I had to go out and do some chores, got back just before 5:00, I called; alas;  they closed at 4:30.

There is always tomorrow.

I did some checking earlier this morning, looks like the barrel assy for the Titan XL is out, size to large for the compression tube assy.

Here are the parts from the Trail NP exploded view and parts list; Model BS8M22XNP; these 'should' work.

1 ea BT1500-01-1 Sleeve Cover
2 ea GBT-3452.1-2005 O Rings 15.5x1.8-G.S.
1 ea BT9M22-01-1 Sleeve
1 ea BT9M22-01-2 Sleeve Link
1 ea BT9M22-01-100 Barrel Assembly (5.5mm/.22 cal)
1 ea B12-00-1B Link Pin
1 ea BT9M22-00-1 Sling Mount

While I'm at it I'll order a few of the breach and piston seals.

I'll check on the cost of the BT9M22SNP-03-00 Synthetic Stock Assembly,  I really like the feel of it even though it is a bit heavy.

I hear the the parts are reasonably priced,  I hope so.

Take care,

Mark

Mark, if you're ok with synthetic stocks, you might give the Phantom stock a try.  IMO it is one of the most comfortable rifle stocks I've ever used.  I'm about 5'10" 160 lbs and it fits me like a glove, and probably lighter than the Trail stock.  Just food for thought.  Good luck with the build, hope you'll keep us updated (with pics of course).

Scotty,

Thanks,  I'll have to check the Phantom Stock out.  I didn't order a stock this day, you got me thinking about other stock options.  I just ordered all the barrel parts and some breach seals and some chamber seals.
I was surprised; the barrel was under 20 bucks and most of the other parts were only a $1.15 or so.   The entire order I placed came to under 50 bucks including the shipping.
That gives me spare parts for the other rifle I have.
There aren't many stores around here that carry pellet rifles that you can pickup and hold to get a feel for them.
There is a Gander Mtn. store a few blocks from me, alas, they don't have much in the air rifle area. all their boxes are sealed.
same with Wally World.
I did stop over to Fin Fur and Feather, looks like they have more, just didn't have time to look around, that was a couple months ago.

The fellow on the Order Line from Crosman was really nice to deal with,  I'm sure I'll be ordering more form them.

I'm pretty handy at repairing things, my forte is electronics.
that B-19 Trigger Group that Crosman uses is poor, glad that there is a fellow out there that has a replacement available.
I got a Charlie Da Tuna trigger for my Benj Nitro Trail, best investment that I made.
I know about mechanics, I saw some trigger fixes out there that are just plain scarey,
There are things that come into play that some don't realize, like, what if the rifle gets dropped a certain way... lest I degress...

I've been looking thru this site, there is tons of good info on it, the moderators do a great job with it.

Take care,

Mark

You are right the staff of the GTA are exceptional people.  As for Crosman they make owning their airguns a more pleasant experience with there service.

Greetings all,

The parts i ordered came in and I had some time today so i pulled the barrel off my gun.
I was able to remove the barrel from the breech  block on my gun, the replacement barrel would not budge, so, I had to punch out the cocking rivet and replace the breech and barrel as a unit.
Barrel droop woes...
Well..
I partially assembled the barrel with only the pivot pin and the washers without the seal,  I had a weaver barrel mount that I picked up a while back, so, before I installed the shroud I mounted it on the barrel,
I used a small level and checked the weaver mount on the gun against the barrel, yep, barrel droop...
I took a small file and slowly begun the process of removing metal from the breech checking it as I went.  I did a final squaring up with 150 the 600 grit paper.
I used a light and made sure I was square with the tube, It took a couple hours but I got it level with the barrel, I flipped the barrel weaver mount to make sure it was true before i started.
It was interesting in that I could actually see the droop simply by looking along the breach top side compared to the compression tube.
I saw a post here and it sure makes scene.

I then cleaned the inside of the barrel with break cleaner and goof off, man was it loaded with the brown cosmoline gunk.

Pushing a pellet down the barrel was smooth except for both ends,  Had to recrown the barrel, it was a little off center, so I worked on both ends.
It took a few hours before I got it back together.  I put a seal shim under the main breach seal, used dental floss on it, glad I did as the lockup wasn't tight due to the seal setting out too far, removing the shim fixed the problem.  I cut a cleaning patch in half and rolled it up and poked it in the very end of the chamber exit hole so I wouldn't get any filings down there.  I used a pin to dig it out when I was done.

Shooting it for the first time was a little loud, that settled down after the first few pellets.

I put the shroud on and now just have to season the barrel and sight in the scope.

It shot high, the first five pellets were within an inch and a half at 30 feet.

I'm still learning to shoot these buggers, they are sure fun to work on.

I'm thinking about building up a chrony to do some measurements.

Always learning new tricks,  hopefully I will now have a bit of a tack driver now.

Take care,

Mark

I'm interested in this project as I just picked up a venom, too. I had considered buying the Trail NP, as the nearly full shroud made me think it 'must' be quiet...but the Venom was right in front of me 'tuther day and I HAD to pick it up.
I like how quiet it seems compared to most of my springers, and wondered outloud if the shroud would help that even further. Does the shroud help make it quieter, or is it just for looks and weight?

Hopkinton,

Yep quieter,  When I got it I thought the muzzle break they talk about had some active strippers in it, alas, no...
I always seem to go the hard route.  I never considered getting the barrel as an assembly.

My nitro venom barrel was actually loose in the breach.  When I got all the parts in I thought I could get the barrel out of the breach, no go.
I punched out the locking pin and heated it up with a heat gun,  couldn't get it to budge so I switched out the barrel.

The Trail barrel has a strap mount, part of the breach,  I put that on as well.
The pivot pin is a soft rivet, I took a punch and drove the original one out to use the same cocking shoe, had to punch it pretty hard to get it out.

Take care,

Mark

I have a phantom stock if you're interested. I'll let it go cheap, or possible trade for pellets or whatever.

Thanks Mark!
I just printed out the parts list...I'll be contacting Crosman tomorrow.
Quiet is good.
S ilence is Golden.
But I'll take quiet-er.
my Venom only hits about 750 fps average with 14.3s so I don't think it should be loud anyway. BUT, and here's the BUT...even though it's much more quiet than even a tuned spring rifle, there's something that is needling me to play with it and get it being even more so.

Ryan,

Thanks, how much with shipping,  I'm at 44718 zip code.
I'm still kinda of looking at other stocks.  I saw that Crosman has a new one out there, Legacy Jim Shockey Signature Series, wonder if they are selling parts for it yet?  I'll call and see sometime soon here.

Take care and happy Shooting,

Mark
