Title: Let's see your backpacker cheek risor
Post by: FuzzyGrub on October 23, 2012, 10:38:42 PM
With a scope on a 1377 carbine project, I need to add a cheek risor to the backpacker stock.  I'd like to see pictures of what you have come up with.   Here is where I'm at, so far.  Very basic.

If you want basic and light...a piece of pine stock, square or round, of the size of rise you want,  that you profile, paint, and screw on.  I know You can make it look good.   Mike

I remember a while back a member making one with PVC pipe. I think I remember that he cut in half length wise.   If I find it I will post it.

afaik they are a direct fit

The stock is only 5/8" wide, and most of the ones you can purchase are for standard wood stock or colapsable AR style.   Most seem like they would overwelm the sleek look of this type of gun.

Is the backpacker stock solid plastic, or does it have a hollow section inside?

if your looking for a complete wood stock to replace the plastic, you can look at Steve Cocoran's stocks,
http://www.woodsandwateroutdoors.com/ (http://www.woodsandwateroutdoors.com/)
if your looking just for a riser for your plastic 1399 stock, there are several ways to add a riser.
Pic of Prod  below with the 1399 stock and an added riser.
I had piece of an old walnut flag pole that I cut down , drilled two holes into the stock added two screw nuts into the wood and attached it to the stock. nothing fancy, but it gives just enough to get a good cheek wield. the stock was just a little too long for my liking so it was cut down to fit me better. LOP is about
13 1/2"  . you can see the difference between the OEM and the cut down one.

Solid plastic.

Here's my cheek riser. Light and effective, but not "compact".

Cut the stock apart, used some Carbon tubing and glued it back together....

Thx guys, keep the pics coming.

So far, I'd say the SKS keeps with the styling without major changes to the stock.

JMJ,

What is the big white dial for?   Also like to know more about the mod to increase lop.

rsterne,

Do you have a thread on that build?  Intereted in how the longer compression tube and arm were done.

Another question on the backpacker stock:  I get a little movement in the stock to frame connection even though both screws are tight.  Slight forward/backward movement, like it is pivoting on the two screws.  I notice it mostly if I plant the stock into my shoulder.   Is that normal?  If so, is the best solution a through bolt/pin?  or just some shimming?

The dial is a Lead Shed - holds 20 or so pellets.

Here's a picture with the Lead Shed on its new mount, tucked farther inside the stock.

I had a the same wiggling in the stock. Cured it with a third screw at the bottom of the grip.

Here's an easy fix for the "moving" stock. Put a size 006 "O" ring on the alignment post before you put the stock on. Problem solved

I like the paint job on that stock. Riser job looks clean.

I did find the "how-to" on how to make one from a pvc pipe.  It looked good, but not sure I could get some of the H/W.   I went with the easy choice, for now, the SKS.  Thanks for your input.

NP, while waiting for parts, (crosman & mellonair) started to work on the trigger.  Polished trigger and sear wear areas, added some brass spacer washers, and some moly.  It is smoother, but pull is still too much.  Need to experiment with springs and make a guide.

Here is a pic of the SKS cheek rest mentioned above. It's easy to modify to fit your stock and works great.

Got the SKS.  What was your modification method?   Epoxy some wedges inside the sks?   I'd like no modifications to the stock.  I have the disco iron sights on it now, and the cheek risor has to come off to use them.

I used foam/rubber wedges on both sides then tightened. That's it. No mod to the stock. You can use the felt side of velcro strips and then stick them on the stock or the inside of the cheek rest sides.

Pipe insulation from Lowes. Not very fancy, but works for me. I also cut 1 3/4" from stock. The stock is solid.

Foam/rubber is working better than I thought it would.  I had some from speaker building.  Two strips near the top, and one on the lower, on bth sides.   Not rock solid, but very firm.

I actually did that when shooting the gun (pipe insulation).  It was still a little low for me with my combo, and wanted a little more form with function.  ;)
