Title: Gas Spring VS. Spring-Piston Which one its better?
Post by: rojoduto on February 12, 2012, 11:15:28 PM
Hi I am in search of a good air rifle, but not by deciding what type! single story with a budget of $ 500 to buy the rifle and all the accessories you need! (a good scope, pellets and a decent case).

"Better" is relative.  I can tell you that a gas ram is a lot better at being a gas ram than a spring piston...but a marshmallow is better than a spring piston in that arena, too.

I think that some gas rams are superior to some spring guns, but in general I think springs are better.  They've been around longer and the manufacturers have figured out how to get the most out of them...and the buyers have had plenty of time to improve on even that.  I think that gas ram reliability is still in question, but that is something that only time will tell for certain.

I claim to be no expert.  This is just what I think based on what I've seen while surfing unreasonable amounts of time on the internet.

What I like is you can really dial in the FPS to pellet in my RX2 .22cal. With my Prosport .22cal it is what it is. Both are great shooters.  Craig

"I" prefer the gas ram compared to the 2 previous untuned spring guns I had. The action is more predictable, and the internal mechanicals are quieter and less vibration with the cheek weld transfer.

I think for most part it hard to recommend a gas ram air rifle in your price range.  It seem almost every model has good reviews and bad reviews from different owners.  But hard to find a bad review on a rifle like a RWS 34.  The Hatsans are new to the market and have read only good things. Seems owners are starting to convert their Hatsans to gas rams.

Check the Airgun forum classifieds. You can get a used RX/HW90 series gas ram rifle in that +/-price range. These rammers are based on a Theoben design, and are power adjustable to suit your personal needs. You will need/want to invest in some type of pump system, but believe me, it is worth every cent ;) Want a leisurely back yard plinker at 14 fpe,....super! But if you decide you're going to do some hunting afield and feel you need more power, not a prob. Unscrew the port, hook up the pump and hose, and you are only a few pumps to a 23 fpe monster that will literally launch BT's from any limb into the air!!!! I would recommend starting with the .20 and up calibers. That is unless you have an unlimited supply of heavy .177 pellets. Another great attribute of the gas ram equiptment rifles is their ability to shoot heavier than normal pellets that you really wouldnt shoot in a conventional spring piston gun.

tjk has it right. I have the HW90 in .25 caliber and am glad I spent a little more to get it. ;D

Details on how you intend to use the gun would be helpful.  Hunting, plinking, FT, little bit of everything.........?

If I had to select one do-it-all gun in the $500 price range I'd go with a spring gun.  Springs function very well and are cheap consumable items that can be replaced for $15.

I currently have a Trial NP .22 and two Hatsan made rifles.  I have a Mod95 .22 and a Winchester 1100XSU.  The Trail is very smooth and very quiet, but only after many hours of work, new seals and the CDT trigger.  The Hatsans are very loud with a little twang from the springs, but I go to them before my trail for accuracy and impact force.  Both Hatsans outperform the Trail NP in power and accuracy and cost less.  The build quality of the Hatsan rifles is a step above RWS in my opinion.

Even though my Trail NP is smoother and more quiet, I still prefer my spring powered Hatsans, accuracy wins. Plus the Hatsan rifles are just plain beautiful if you get the walnut stock versions.
