Can tree rats swim?

The tree rats in my neck of the woods must be imbreeding. So I was going out to the spa in the back yard and a darn tree rat was getting ready to toss my wifes songbird feeder. So i retreat back and grab the 1720T. I have see thru scope covers which I left on for the frosting do to bringing the AG from the indoors to the humid outdoors in here in LA (lower Alabama). The stupid thing hears the screen door open and make a b-line. Not for the cover of bushes and trees, but runs out on my dock. I'm laughing, but then realize I don't know if tree rats can swim.
So I let him have it from about 25 yards free hold and he moved just in time and took only a shot to the chin. So this is the first tree rat that took 2 shots with my 1720T.
Not my cup of tea, but I guess it happens.

Yes they can swim but its not something they usually do on purpose or extremely well.

One of my best friends would have squirrels swim in his pool all time. It was easier to hit them that way >

I never thunk it. A few years back (remember the drought?), I saw it a couple times while fishing. I learned from the District Fish and Wildlife Bioligist, it was quite uncommon, and that they were stressed, due to poor mast crop that year...and got a number of calls from fishermen about it.
Still...they were weird sightings, (kinda like a little lochness), that I had to look at a few times to believe.

Yep they absolutely will swim. I remember a guy on another forum saw a black one swimming across a big river and as it neared the other side they caught up to it in a boat and killed it with a knock to the head from a oar. I also remember another person saying they saw one swimming across a river and it got swallowed by a catfish. I had a pool for years and never saw a nutter swim in it or even drink from it although I did see a lot of other critters in it. My 200lb Newfoundland would swim to the bottom of the deep end and catch them then walk into the yard and crunch them up.
