Title: Centerpoint 3-9x40MM Scope That Comes with Benjamin Trail NP
Post by: jseamless on September 02, 2010, 08:16:35 AM
This seems to be a rather clear scope.  I am having some issues with it fogging up when I bring it out of the car or house into the hot Texas heat.

Also I don't like the fact that you don't have to take off any caps to make windage and elevation adjustments.  It seems like this scope will be hard keep zeroed because of this.

Any suggestions?

The fogging problem is nothing unique to the Centerpoint scopes.
It's all about a rifle brought out of an air conditioned car into heat and humidity.
I believe there are some solutions that can be applied to the lenses that can minimize this.
I'm surprised that you have to remove the w/e caps, since I thought all Centerpoints either had the Allen screws that needed backing off for adjustment, or they had the finger adjustable lock ring.
Could you clarify?
Also, you will find that Centerpoints are one of the most respected scopes on here.

I am unaware of what you are talking about here.  I did not see any such screws.  I did not see any info about this in the sheet that came with the scope.

Oldpink is correct that it's not a scope-only problem. Any cool surface suddenly subjected to hot, humid air will condense the moisture in the air and "fog" the surface until that surface reaches close to air temperature.

Not sure of the name of any lense coatings that work as an anti-fog, but I've heard about them on powder burner forums. I can tell you first hand that the RainX brand of anti-fog didn't work on my binos at all (didn't prevent fogging of the inside of antique car windshields either)!!!

As to the Trail's Center Point scope W/E adjusting knobs not coming with covers, being that it's sorta like a mildot scope (no dots, just tick marks !), they're supposed to be like target turret knobs. The ones on my Trail XL don't move all that easily when I adjust it, and they haven't budged since.

Some other scopes have the locking screws and target turret finger locking ring Oldpink mentions. My 3-12 Leapers Miniswat has them (the locking rings don't hold), but the CenterPoint scopes that come with the Trails don't.

He is talking about the Turrets, most somehow have a way of locking in place to set your adjustment. I was trying to look at the pic of that scope on the PA website...

It looks like those are the pull/push and lock type turrets, if so you are lucky those are pretty nice for quick adjusting. I would really like those on my Mrod, currently I am using the Leapers with the locking allen screws and they are a pain to adjust if needed in the feild because you need to carry the allen key!! that is why I just use hold over/ mil-dots

Maybe it would be useful to get your point across if you simply took some high resolution digital photos up close of the turrets on your scope, then post them here, so we can see what you are talking about.
Also, take at least two sets of photos, one with and one without the scope caps you mention.

He is right, the scope that came with my NP XL is like that too, turrets have no caps nor the center allen screw to lock them like the Adventure class centerpoints, in this scope they are free, you can adjust them without having to go thru any other step.

That scope now is on my Gamo .177 and has being replaced by a 3-9x40 Adventure class  ;)

Here are some pictures of my scope.  I love the easy adjustment however I am concerned it will get jacked up easily.

And yup, that's the same scope as my Trail XL1100 came with. As you can see, the turrets are low profile "target type", but they are not the push/pull locking type. I think it's a great scope. Clearer than my 3-12 Leapers, and has held up to more pounding than my Leapers got on my 22 Whisper before it died.

I've had the gun for months now and haven't had any problem with the turrets moving. Like I said they don't move all that easily when you want them to move. Bumped up against something I think you'd have to work at hitting them just right to get them to turn. I use mine for hunting and I'm not the least concerned that they'll be a problem without covers.  And, if you sight it in, then loosen the two small screws on top of each turret and re-zero the scale, you can easily see if the turrets have been moved off zero.

BTW, that model of CenterPoint 3-9 AO scope that Crosman puts on the Trails is not shown on their's, or CenterPoints website. But, if you go to Hawke's website and look at their pictures of their AirMax scopes, the Trail CenterPoints are identical externally to the AirMax.

I suspect that because Hawke's are so well made, Crosman/CenterPoint had Hawke (or whoever makes Hawke's scopes) make this model of CenterPoint so that it could withstand the increased recoil of the Trail XL's.

Anyway, it's a good scope and has held up to the more than two thousand pellets I've put through my XL since I got it over five months ago.

I'll be darned.
I was unaware that there were Centerpoints with those turrets.
Just a suggestion for you, but if the annoyance of unscrewing the turrets gets to you out in the field, you could simply unscrew them and put them in a safe place at home.
You could then do quick adjustments until you get back home to put them back on.
Having the caps off will not hurt a thing.

By the way, it's nice to see that you had the forethought to mount on top of an 11mm to Weaver adapter rail.
That is the ultimate recoil proof rig.

The Trail series come with Weaver rail :)

Looks as if Crosman is thinking the right way there.
The only way I could stop my scope from slipping in the rings was to switch over to a Weaver adapter rail (mine is a really cool Sun Optics) and some stout Leupold steel Weaver style rings.
The rings are locked solidly, and the scope does not move at all now.
I had the slipping problem right after I had the gas ram installed in my .22 CFX.
It took a lot of time and effort to finally hit upon this ultimate solution.
