Brocock Compatto v. Hatsan Gladius Long

This has been my choice for a while and after gleaning as much info as I could I finally made the call for the Gladius. I was looking at both in .25 and the features that I liked on both was a variety of power selection. I think the Brocock might be a tad higher in build quality but I felt there's much more out there in terms of support for the Hatsan AT44 platform. Plus I think the Hatsan will be quieter stock as I'd have to purchase an additional LDC for the Compatto which is already $130 more than the Gladius and the deal I got includes a $125 scope free so that makes it a $255 swing not including shipping or LDC. I also think the Hatsan is capable of a higher FPE but the Compatto might have a higher shot count which is important to me since I use a pump to fill. It's on backorder and they say 7-10 days. We'll see. I'm in no hurry though.

Brocock hands down. Great shooter and super light plus its pretty quiet with LDC. Very accurate as well. Im looking for a used one for my own personal collection.

It was a tough call and I know I'd be happy with either but in the end the Gladius was probably close to $300 cheaper and that's fairly significant for me. I'm not a collector; I can see myself owning 3 PCP's tops. The other two would be a smaller caliber, super high shot count for recreational plinking and if I ever have a need of something bigger for pesting or hunting then a .30 or something. Right now either the Compatto or Gladius ticks most of the boxes for me. Of the Gladius owners/reviews I've been able to see so far one had some JSB Kings spiraling a bit but that's it. The same reviewer also had a low power issue w/the Compatto but both of those were easily overcome.

I also looked at the Brocock and almost chose it based on the Gladius being too heavy. I figured I buy the Gladius and if it was too heavy Pyramydair would just take it back within 30 days. Well anyways I got the Gladius .25 short and it rocks !! Super unexpectedly quiet and its so well balanced I don't noticed its heaviness which I hear complained about by guys that don't even own it. I'm ecstatic over my decision and got a great deal as well 😆

3lbs difference in weight is huge in my book it cant be overlooked even if its a bullpup you still have to pack it around. I havent shot a Gladius yet but I have the Brocock and it is very well built and super easy to shoulder, to me the extra $300 to get a fine well thought out rifle of superior quality is a no brainer but I can understand keeping in a budget. You should look at the used gun section here at AOA. Some smoking deals

3 lbs to me isn't and wasn't a deal breaker. I can see how it would be to others tho.

I did check the used deals there and honestly it's hard to find good data on some models but from what I could tell all the Brococks in the used section were going to be less powerful and louder than the Gladius and this is my 2nd PCP. My first was used and was not an experience I want to go through again (in short, don't buy 4+ previous owners 'project' gun unless YOU want a project gun too
) so buying 'new' was tops on my list this time around. Maybe I'll still get a Brocock one day but right now I'm looking forward to the Gladius.

Regarding the Brocock - who is supporting these in case issues come up?

After much research, I am down to these two guns as well. Oldpro, do you own or shot any Hatsan like a Galatian with the side-lever? How does this compare with the Compatto bolt-action. I really like the Compatto with its new owner, Daystate implemented, like the mags and overall quality. I am probably leaning towards the Gladius, based mainly on price as I can snag one off of Amazon where I have a significant amount of gift cards and AMEX points I can use towards the purchase. The way it sits now, I can actually buy a BSA R10 cheaper (via Amazon) than a Compatto with my situation. But, willing to hear your thoughts.

My opinion is as follows. If you want a LIGHT well thought out tack driver with superior fit and finish buy the brocock if you want to save money and sport around a gun thats twice the weight buy the Hatsan. I cant say enough about how the Brocock shoots and feels plus its feather light in the hands. It costs more because its better end of story. P.S I am not affiliated with Brocock in any way nor have I shot the new Gladius. My opinoin is based solely on the few Brococks ive shot and the many hatsans ive shot.

Oh boy another opinion placed about a gun the person doesn't actually own. I've owned different Fords but wouldn't give an opinion on one I haven't actually owned. Just saying and not trying to be offensive .Just my opinion . 😉

Joe have you ever owned a Brocock or shot one? If you had youd understand what Im saying and I did state I never shot a Gladius but have almost every other Hatsan made many many many times. And if theres a thread or someone asks what would you rather have LIKE in this thread Ill tell them the same thing I already stated based on my own personal experience. Look in my list of guns below I own a Hatsan and its a fine gun but not a Brocock or FX or other high end gun. The Hatsan line like the Benjamin line have their place and are good guns they just need tinkering with and that is fun for most of us.

No I have never owned a Brocock so I won't state an opinion on it and compare it to my Gladius. No worries. We all have our opinions and that's why this forum is so great for all of us. Its a great source of information.

The hardest thing in trying to decide between these two models is there's little info on the Gladius but that's still twice as much as there is on the Compatto. More data, reviews, videos, personal testimonies will come out about each and maybe a year from now it'll be much easier to compare the two, but for now it's not easy. A head to head review would be awesome.

Looking at some of specifications these look a bit different
Barrel Length
Compatto 18.0"
Gladius Short 19.4"
Gladius Long 23.0"
Power
Compatto export .177 up to 18 FPE
Gladius Short .177 - 22 FPE
Gladius Long .177 - 27 FPE
Compatto export .22 up to 27 FPE
Gladius Short .22 - 31 FPE
Gladius Long .22 - 38 FPE
Compatto export .25 - TBA FPE
Gladius Short .25 - 34 FPE
Gladius Long .25 - 42 FPE
Hatsan provide much more data, so using FPS and FPE you can calculate pellet weight they used for testing, or at least an avg between the two barrel lengths.
.25 long 20.10 gr / .25 short 20.22 gr
.22 long 14.94 gr / .22 short 14.83 gr
.177 long 8.88 gr / .177 short 8.65 gr
Air Tube
Compatto 150cc
Gladius 255cc
Hatsan does a very good job of providing detailed data, which would be nice if all manufacturers did the same.
Look at Hatsan USA website and they have many charts including performance at different power settings.
All the data available weighed heavily on my decision to make a purchase as it becomes much less of an emotional decision vs based on real data. I was able to compare this to some other guns where it was available, including other Hatsan models.
From an engineering and quality perspective, I generally gravitate to the better within reason (cost). Would take an FX Impact over a Gladius in a heartbeat for a host of reasons, and that will likely be the next gun I purchase at some point.
From an aesthetic perspective I was very much attracted to the Gladius, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder and totally personal. Having said that, having two of my friends who have many years experience with powder burners shoot the Gladius they couldn't believe accuracy at 50yds and couldn't comprehend it was an air rifle when they first saw it.
Brocock may well be a better engineered and refined product, and I will defer on that as I haven't had their products in my hands.

Hey GD, I'm a 61 year old 6' 150 lbs bicycle racer who owns both the Gladius and Galatian and especially with the Gladius find the weight for myself to be a non issue. Don't know what it is but the Gladius in use feels a lot lighter than the Galatian. I use the Galatian for target shooting off a bench and the Gladius for hiking around in the woods for miles plinking. I'm pretty fit but no weightlifter so my guess is you are going to love the Gladius. I could have bought something else, I looked at the Atamans but have no regrets whatsoever. ps: Yes, my dog weighs more than I do...
