I have a bunch of .22 ammo for my trail np hardwood, but kinda wanted this XL more for hunting. What would you suggest fot hunting purposes, the .22 or the .25?

They are great either way. Seems like the Trail is preferred by most in .22, but I am a quarterbore fan and would rather have it in .25. Economy ane availability of ammo obviously goes to the .22

Dont worry, those XL's put out about 26 or 27fpe in 22 cal, and just a smidge more in 25, you will have all yhe power you can handle. Heck, my tuned xl put out more power then my stock .22mrod!! (Not anymore, =) haha) but yeah man, there are tons more ammo options available for the .22 and you will find out that, a deuce deuce to the noggin of most critters under 15lbs is lights out. Mine use to zing clean through squirel skulls under 50yds and riccotchet off the ground. If your heart is set on the 25, that one might be slightly more accurate for longer distances since it will buck the wind slightly better. A 5mph wind isnt very noticible at 50yds, but it sure does throw those pellets around at 100yds!! Keep in mind that, a .25 cal XL slinging 25gr pellets will be a hair under 700fps. So, they will smack with some serious authority but have the trajectory of a dang mortar! I like my shots cooking around 865 or as close to 900 as i can get ao i have a pretty predictable pellet drop to estimate at longer distances. 700fps will give you loads of drop beyond say, 75yds. But if your doing damage control under 50yds, you wont even notice it. Hope that didnt confuse you too badly,... My vote is still for the 22. Great guns once they are tuned. Mine was a heck of a project getting consistant. Ha, good luck man

Mine shoots .22 at 910fps, .25 at 740(FTT's) It certainly seems to like being a .25 better; but everything Brewerja said applies.

My vote is for the .25. I have a 725 np xl and it spins nutters around at 30yds.

Ok, basic physics leason: the power plant is exactly the same that means you will only get X fpe out of the gun whether is it a .22 or .25 cal. Those that shoot .22 if you get it over a Chrony you will see that as you increase pellet weight(Gr.) and decrease velocity(FPS) your energy(FPE) will increase but only to a certain level at which point you will start to loose energy, this is the peak energy of the power plant, if you do the same test in .25cal you will find that the peak should be within a few fpe of each other as that is the max that plant will put out....
Now retained energy is another story, the heavier pellets with the higher Balistic Coeficient (BC) will retain more energy down range and delilver a bigger Wallop...
So ends the leason for today....
