Title: FX Independence .22 cal Pellet Test
Post by: kelly on January 24, 2013, 12:05:49 AM
Hello All - I got a new FX Independence 22 cal from AOA on Monday and did some testing with some 22 pellets I had on hand. Other than the JSB Jumbo's everything was not good (see pix below). All were shot on high power @ 20 yards
My question is what other pellets are working out of this ST barrel ??
I am looking for a good hunting pellet ...
TIA
Peace
Kelly

H&N Barracudas 21 gr.Very good
Jsb 18.3 gr excellent
Jsb 15.9gr excellent
Crosman premiers boxed 14.3 ( Hard pellet penetrates well) excellent
Jsb Diabolo straton 16gr excellent
These barrels like a oversized pellet most times, those are the top 5.
Have tried rws super h points Very accurate along with the super domes...But has a low BC, will still get the job done out to 40 yards.
All these mentioned are 1 hole accurate at 24 yards. The heavier pellets will retain better energy. The Jsb 15.9 give some great numbers across the crony spread and deviation wise.
But accuracy rules!

My smooth twist experience is in .25 and .30 cal so this may not apply to your .22.  JSB have always been the pellet of choice. Never had any luck getting cuda's to shoot very good.  Either way, have fun playing with your new toy.

Does a smooth twist barrel not also require some break in period? If so, shoot a tin of pellets before deciding on the perfect pellet. Also, when testing different pellets, run a few patches through the barrel and shoot about a dozen or so of the different pellet before shooting for accuracy so the barrel is properly releaded.

David - I also got a .25 Indy last week what pellets are doing well for you in .25
I did get the JSB Exact King and they shoot very well so far ...
As far as break in I dont thing there really is any ... as there is no traditional rifling ....
Also FX recommends using cleaning pellets

Just an observation.  The pellets that group well for you seem to be the heaver types.  It may be possible that the 14gn types are just going too fast and suffering from bumping against the sound barrier.

Hi Kelly I have a few H&N barracuda hunter extrem's If you want to try a few befor you buy a tin. Im at Yuma and Seravial. Your JSB heavys look pretty good.  I would also heed what was said by TheKid about oversized.

Good luck and have fun

jsb heavy in mine works best.  I have a airtube extension on my .22 Indy that give me 18 shots on a fill.

I wonder how the FX pellets themselves work.
They look like the JSB heavies in .177 do.
They are also 18 gr. I was given some of the cuda's to try in the FX when I purchased it.
I was told those and the JSB's were the best.
Now in all fairness, I rarely ramp the power up to level 3 (max), I keep it a level 2.
17 fpe is all I need right now, do not know if that has an effect on accuracy.
Just about everything I feed this gun, it shoots good to great, might be the level I keep it at.

I also clean my barrel with cleaning pellets, every few hundred shots.
Sweet guns these are.

I also posted this question on the yellow to gain additional input and from what I have gathered in both places  I am going to get some JSB 18.1 and see how they do for me ... I just want to make sure I have at least 2 pellets I can shoot well just in case I cant get the other ...
All that took the time to share thank you ...
blueline - Thanks for the offer I'll see how things go but I just might take you up on your offer ..I am in Estrella Mountain Ranch so you are pretty close .. Thx again
Kid - the FX pellets according to the AOA guys are just re-branded JSB's I am working at full power right now so I can get a feel for the hunting side once I have mastered that then I will start working on the next 2 settings. I will repeat this test this weekend at the medium setting and post the results ... Wonder how that will turn out ... ya never know

If you're looking for a hunting pellet, don't forget to try the Predators. They are very accurate in my Indy

How, they do not fit in the rotary mag, at least not in my .22 mag.
The tips prevent it.
