Title: Airgun noob/Camo Rocket IGT discussion
Post by: edfmaniac on January 19, 2013, 02:47:02 PM
Hello everyone. I'm new to airguns and just purchased the Gamo Camo Rocket IGT to get started in the hobby. Having hunted deer for many years as a child, I have some experience in shooting. Right now, after about 200 rounds through the gun, it's grouping very well at 15yds, probably dime size when I'm doing everything right. If I move the targets up to 10yds the pellets still group well but are hitting low on the target. If memory serves me correctly, when shooting ballistic rounds out of a high powered rifle, my father told me that the gun will shoot low at very close range if the scope is sighted in for targets further away because the projectile is still climbing. Is it possible that is what I'm experiencing? Does anyone have a chart that shows typical trajectories for the average pellet at given distances from the gun? If my thinking is correct, then bringing the scope up to center at 10yds will make me high at 15, but dead on again at some other distance beyond that. Thanks!

Victor

I guess I should have waited until after I did a brief search to ask the question about trajectory. In short order, I found and downloaded a simple reticle calculator program from Hawke Optics.  It confirmed my suspicions. With my ammo and a guessed muzzle velocity of 1000fps, a zeroed in range of 15yds puts you almost a half inch low at 10, a half inch high at 30, and almost dead on again at around 40yds. The flattest trajectory on my set up would probably have me zeroing in the scope at around 20 yards, making me .2 low at 15yds, .1 low at 35yds, and still only a half inch low at 40. Cool software!
